I seriously doubt Bush would have an ice-cube's chance in hell to win re-election with such a poor economy and after all of the things have happened since Obama has been POTUS.

Yet many claim that Obama has a better then 50-50 chance of being re-elected. Why is this?

It's simple. Nothing bad that happens is blamed on Obama while everything that happens in the universe was blamed directly on Bush.

It seems one lone nut-case in Arizona has bailed Obama out. Just when he was courting with approval ratings in the 30s, now Obama is back up around 50%. Never mind the lousy way he's handled the economy, the massive increase of the debt under his watch, the scandalous manner in which his responded to the Gulf oil spill, the release of hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents. Let's not forget the fact that hundreds of Americans ares still dying in foreign lands, and it seems Obama is trying to become Ronald Reagan now.

Anyone else would have resigned in shame, but not Obama. Nothing seems to effect him personally. Nothing is his fault. He keeps giving his speeches with a straight face while his party politely applauds his efforts claiming that Social Security is well funded for the next 40 years, and that deficit-reduction was their primary goal. The lies that pass their lips are too funny to be believable.

So considering all of this, do you think Obama would have a chance in hell if he got the same kind of treatment Bush got? Do you think that the MSM is gonna be able to sell this pack of lies to the public long enough to get this loser another 4 years?

There is no doubt that he gets a pass on a lot of shit for some reason. Just 1 example is fuel prices. Folks of all political stripes were freaking out when it went over 3bucks under Bush, yet hardly a fucking peep now when the price of everything, EVERYTHING, is going through the roof.

If you're expecting rational thinking to be reflected in polls then you're sort of missing the point about polls.

Polls measure public percertion.

Since when does public perception have anything to do with reality?

Could anyone, Republican or Democrat, turn around a mess in two years that took eight years to make?

That's ridiculous. It took way more than 8 years to make. :eusa_angel:

That's the standard excuse the left uses, but things were fine till the Dems took over congress in 07'.

Either the elections last year were a referendum on Obama and this thread is wrong, or not.

Really??!!
Excepting maybe the small matter of the largest recession since the '30s.
Oh, and the two wars happening at the time...
Not to mention the lonely position that the US's diplomatic policies had placed it in...

Really everything was FINE?!?! WHAT? So everything to cause economic collapse happen between January 2007 when the Dems took over and December of 2007 when we started to see the economy go down the toilet?

If you think things were fine in 2007, then your head was in the sand.

Back in 2007 folks I knew were dumping their stocks and exiting the market. The worst wasn't here yet, but there was clearly a bubble forming. I was switching to an ultra-conservative stance on my retirement funds and saving up.

The economy in 2007 was like a million dollar home with faulty wiring and termites. It looked good on the surface, but close inspection told you a disaster was immenent.

The only thing that has happened is the right wing media and left wing media have switched roles.

I think there's some truth in that, but there's also the fact that Bush got a heck of a lot of free passes from everyone in the Media. There was pretty much zero media oversight in the run up to Iraq, his economic policies were buried, and some of the more insane Presidential Orders were just flat ignored.

Coverage of Bush reminds me of coverage of Obama. A lot of useless name calling, a lot of free press for political opponents, but very little in the way of actual coverage of what he's actually up to.

You're confusing rhetoric from the left with reality.

It's going to take 20 years to fix the mess obama keeps making. What the government started in 2000 obama just keeps making it worse.

No. The groundwork for the recession was there. The prpblem was the Dems did nothing to stop it. They did nothing but make it worse.

By 2007 there was nothing anyone could have done to stop it. The damage had already been done. The subprimes had already been made, the derivatives sold, and the national debt had already been sold off to China.

The real estate bubble was already obvious to anyone paying attention in 2006, just to name that. NPR was doing stories on the dangers of the derivative market by that point too IIRC. Truth be told, it was probably too late as early as 2005, though some action might have helped prevent the worst of it.

Yep it's kind of hard to stop a mess that was created over 30 years ago. You can't help and give to eveybody, sometimes those who are in need of help must help themself.

Yep. You've seen government spending grow under every last administration of the last 30 years, Reagan included. People have been warned and warned about what the effects of running a large national debt would be. We had one moment of sanity under Clinton and Newt, and we kinda blew it after that.

The Housing bubble, the credit bubble, the derivative markets... all of that was just the match that lit the gas filled room of oily rags. Those matches were in place and lit prior to the 2007 election. And the worst is not over yet I'm afraid.
