I'd rather have politicians trying to buy my vote, than special interests buying my Congreesman's vote. One is "business as usual", except it's our money, so not only are they trying to get our vote, but they also have to pay attention to what we want. The other is also "business as usual", but it costs us more money in the end because of secret back room deals that further a special interest's agenda. They don't listen to us, because we're not footing the bill.

You can have pornography on TV or the internet, but you better not put a nativity scene in a public park during Christmas; we have eliminated all criminals in America, they are now called sick people; we can use a human fetus for medical research, but it is wrong to use an animal.

We take money from those who work hard for it and give it to those who don't want to work; we all support the Constitution, but only when it supports our political ideology; we still have freedom of speech, but only if we are being politically correct; parenting has been replaced with Ritalin and video games; the land of opportunity is now the land of hand outs; the similarity between Hurricane Katrina and the gulf oil spill is that neither president did anything to help.

And how do we handle a major crisis today? The government appoints a committee to determine who's at fault, then threatens them, passes a law, raises our taxes; tells us the problem is solved so they can get back to their reelection campaign.

Whining, but no solutions!!! Got a problem with government? Maybe it's because they only listen to those who pay the freight. Get the selling of our representitives' votes out of the system. SUPPORT PUBLIC FINANCING OF ELECTIONS.

wouldnt it be wiser to find and elect politicians that cant be bribed?

I mean...you blame the bribers who you never met, and have no control over....

Yet you seem to give the ones TAKING the bribe a pass.

It is almost like saying the best way to rid the country of pedophilia is to lock all children in their rooms until they are 18.

Are they really bribes, if they're legal? Of course it would be wiser to find honest politicians, but I don't see a major change in human nature on the horizon. How would that work, when most of the money goes to seeing that it doesn't?

My take, a well written partisan Op-Ed filled with hyperbole, half-truths and demagoguery.

The problem is that money influences the elections.
The ONLY thing that should influence elections are the issues.
But when, in order to even COMPETE in the elections, one must have enough money to make oneself heard.

RIGHT THERE, democracy is diluted. It has ceased to be government by, of and for, the people. This politician now carries the burden of having to appease his campaign donors, before he even enters office.

The politician is looking to reward his patrons be, INSTEAD of working on behalf of his constituents.
Before the election, Politicians need wealthy campaign donors more than they need voters. Without enough campaign cash, they cannot even compete for office.

When you take accountability away from the voters and make it dependent upon rich patrons, corruption will follow and it has.


Public funding is the only way to eliminate lobbyist influence.
