What happened to Thanksgiving?

I think Thanksgiving is losing popularity because anything American these days is seen as "bad", if Thanksgiving was a Mexican or Muslim holiday everyone would be all for supporting it and keeping the tradition alive.

I think it is losing popularity in advertising.
With people, I don't see it. We are still Americans and we love our food. Just sayin.

I just think Thanksgiving isn't "cool" or ethnic enough, Thanksgiving is slipping in popularity and Cinco de mayo on the other hand is going through the roof as far as popularity.

Maybe in the bar world.

I go out for Cinco De Mayo, and have my Mexican beer.
But I love thanksgiving. Love it so much my son's birthday will fall it every few years. Last year is birthday was on Thanksgiving, this year it is the day after.
Worst Thanksgiving.......... Was when I was two days away from my due date and couldn't eat that much because I was so huge and about to pop. I got the worst heart burn that day. LOL

Wife and son are on phones, as I type, hammering out who's making what

I make the Watergate Salad
The Missus makes the dressing
Son is making the ham
Got celery stix with cream cheese coming
Somebody will invariably fry a turkey
Wife will make a cheesecake or 2 (my favorite part)

And our gravy is basically a thick broth from the chicken stock, gr. peppers, onions, and celery that was boiled for the dressing/stuffing

Am I alone in noticing that Thanksgiving seems to have been swept under the holiday rug?

Immediately after Halloween, and ever since, I've seen nothing but Christmas advertising and decorations.

Large retailers are hinting at opening on Thanksgiving to get a leg up on "Black Friday" sales.

It's just seeming that Thanksgiving is fading away.....

What can we do to make Thanksgiving "cool" again?

If I was a conspiracy-minded person, I'd think that it sounds too much like a prayer for the GP.....
Just thinking outloud. Don't jump on the "prayer" aspect too much.

Why aren't there any good Thanksgiving songs, anyway???

:eusa_eh:

Apparently Nordstroms announced that they wouldn't be putting up any Christmas decorations until the day after Thanksgiving. Makes me want to shop at Nordstroms.

Okay, 2 things...1) Turkey gravy people, it's called "Turkey day" for a reason. I make really good Turkey gravey.

2) My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is watching the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade...As long as they have that, there will still be Thanksgiving.

My grandkids hate me because I make them watch it every year.
It's just not Thanksgiving without it

My mom usually makes turkey gravy with turkey in it, but I just love brown gravy.

Best part about Thanksgiving..................leftovers.
Plus my mom always makes Turkey Noodle a few days after...I need to have her show me how to make this year.

I don't do the leftovers.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two times I eat most of this stuff

1st step, take all the meat off the turkey carcass.
2nd step, boil said carcass until it is falling apart.
remove all the bones and meat and whatever else from the broth
put the broth in the fridge. Pull it out when it's cold and scrap the grease off the top.
Put the meat in with the broth, add whatever veg you like and cook.
cook noodles separately add to the rest of the soup when it's ready to eat.
salt and pepper to taste.

I cook a lot of soups, today it's navy bean with ham.

I think another reason why Thanksgiving isn't the big family tradition it used to be is because families are scattered all over the country. I have a fairly large family, but most of us live in different time zones.
The past few years we have had friends over.
And we invite singles who have no other place to go.

I love Thanksgiving because it's like Christmas "light". The family gets together and there's a big banquet. No overt commercialism.

The big downside about Thanksgiving for me is the entrée. I do not eat poultry. I have NEVER eaten poultry. I WILL never eat poultry.

This was a problem for Mom while I was a youngster. One Thanksgiving, she made what she called a "beef patty" for my entrée. It was overcooked (as was all of Mom's cooking) and painfully small (I slid it over the shock of wheat that decorated the center of the plate and the "patty" barely obscured the design).

If the Pilgrims were smart, they would have had a succulent lobster dinner. After all, they were on Cape Cod. It's gotta be tougher to track and shoot a turkey with those muzzle loading Blunderbusses than set a lobster trap and wait.

so have lobster sillie......we have duck some years....whatever you want to have....
That "family getting together" thing weighs heavily on the turkey side of the menu. And Mom's allergic to shellfish.

I bring the pies.

Last year, my brother's mother-in-law was charged with the dessert course. She brought sugar free butterscotch pudding with fat free topping.

So, I bring pie.

I love Thanksgiving even though I have a fractured family, even if Thanksgiving is losing popularity with the main stream I will keep celebrating until my last days, it is one of my favorite holidays personally.

I was in the Military for 7 years so alot of people were away from their families for Thanksgiving, supervisors, first sergeants and commanders would go out of their way to make sure everyone had a place to go for that day. That is one of the things I appreciated about the service.

Growing up, I remember several times when dad would bring home an airman or two from the base to have Thanksgiving with us. I think he just want more people to be on his side when it came to the ball game. :D

I have a big family and many of us live in the same area. It is usually a big thing, it used to be bigger but now that my cousins all children and are married, we usually stick to just my parents and my brothers and sisters. My dad's ex wife and husband will be there this year even. LOL

We used to have a big Christmas Eve get together, but now we go to my sister's who cooks a traditional Italian meal with her in laws. Which I LOVE!
