The accusation that the opposition doesn't love the country or is anti-nation is a very old fascists strategy. It assumes that there is one true nation. This accusation assumes that Liberals are not real Americans. They don't fit the one true mold. This is pure fascism.
These kinds of people use terms like "Real American" and "anti-American".
Here is the thing. America is about freedom. It is about the individual's right to define for himself what religion to believe and what values to live by provided he does not harm others. He has a right to live by his values WITHOUT big government intervention. If he chooses to love America for its postwar welfare policies, that is his right. On this view, FDR is as much an American as Ronald Reagan.
In fascists states, a powerful elite sizes power and uses government to impose their values on others - and they define who the real citizens are. And they always scare the populations with demons or non-citizens - like terrorists, baby killers, socialists, gays, liberals, ect. This is exactly what Hitler did with the Jews. These people don't believe in freedom (though in an Orwellian slight of hand they claim to be passionate defenders of freedom).
McCarthy did this with people who supported the New Deal. The Bush administration did it with people who did not support their foreign policy.
The Right always uses a form of quasi-patriotic fascism to impose their version of America on everyone else. They call it the Constitution, but they have no problem destroying the Constitution when it comes to domestic surveillance or using the Supreme Court to intervene in an election.
Republicans always say that people who disagree with their policies hate America. They see only one America, namely theirs. This is pure fascism.
