What do you do for a living?

I hug and kiss babies. I've even been known to rock them to sleep.

Lots of interesting occupations listed here. I even believe some of them. :eusa_angel:

I have lived maybe longer than a lot of you and, because I have lived with a guy who got transferred a LOT, I have had the opportunity to start over numerous time doing many different things in many different places.

I've answered to 'hey you', 'sweetie', 'missy', I think there was a 'little lady' and a 'baby' in there somewhere and have been referred to as brilliant, as an idiot, as wonderful, and as difficult and as impossible. I've been the boss and I've been on the bottom. (Somewhere in the middle is usually more fun.)

Sometimes I've dreaded the thought of going to work; some jobs I couldn't wait to get there. It doesn't really matter all that much what any of us finally wind up doing as our vocations or avocations so long as it is something we would enjoy doing even if we weren't getting paid.

i rob liquor stores.

Really?! Same here!

I'm also a full time student and a full time smartass.

Neither pay well, actually neither pay at all.

Though I do plan on going to college in the fall of 09 after graduating high school this June.

I have decided to major in either Accounting or Finance with a minor in Journalism.

I also happen to write novel length and short stories in my free time (when I'm not here of course).

I plan on writing much more this year and maybe even get something published hopefully before I graduate high school in June.

I'm an accounting and finance double major, though I don't really see how journalism fits in. Unless you want to write about business and finance, but that's even more boring than being an accountant.

Anyway, I do accounting and financial research for one of Walmart's vendors. After I finish my second degree(s) next December, I plan to get my CPA and/or CMA license. My eventual goal is to get my MBA or Master of Accountancy, but I'll take some time off to pay down my student loans in the meantime. Actually, what I really want to do is work with federal agencies on researching sustainability measures and ways to regulate corporate sustainability reports to meet international standards. But that's a pipedream. Jobs like that are near impossible to come by.

Well Journalism is something I've always wanted to do. And I figure if the Accounting/Finance field is still as bad as right now four years from now then I have a backup.

And sounds like you have a plan. My plan one day if I end up getting as far as I want into the Accounting/Finance field is to get my CPA and MBA.

And yeah, a job like that is a pipedream and near impossible to come by. Though if Wall Street has shown us anything of late, it's that they need those measures and regulations badly.

Software engineer, and currently technical lead for a project.

My hat's off to you. My freshman year of college was spent on computer science. Being a computer geek in high school, I thought it'd be cool to be a software engineer and program video games. One year of sitting in front of a computer looking at code was enough to change my mind. Now I spend my days sitting in front of the computer looking at spreadsheets...

Accounting and finance jobs aren't going anywhere. I mean...if you want to be a realtor or banker in this market, you're crazy. But there are plenty of jobs out there for people in those fields. 85% of the graduates from my university have jobs before they graduate. I even know sophomores and juniors who already have jobs lined up for after they graduate.

I also heard that debt collection is one of the fastest growing fields. Not that you need an advanced degree at the entry level, but a degree could put you into a good paying job as a debt specialist. Hehe.

Also, if journalism is your passion, it's not that bad of a field to get into. Of course, the money doesn't start rolling in as easy as it does in the business world, but plenty of freelance writers take home hefty chunks of cash. Really, it depends on how good you are. The business world is more about whom you know and whom you're willing to throw under the bus.

True, but you can never be too sure I suppose.

Debt collection ironically is one of the fastest growing fields. Some people will always have a job.

And the part I bolded is exactly why Journalism isn't my major. I love it but I rather not be a starving artist.

And you are hitting the nail on the head when you describe the business world. Which is probably why so many successful people in the business world would be willing to throw their own mothers under the bus to get ahead.

It's somewhat related to Journalism, but I do plan to write more this year as I stated already. If that actually panned out into something, that'd be quite nice.

Aww, now, suits aren't that bad. They wouldn't throw their own mother under the bus. An annoying sibling? Maybe, it depends on how much money we're talking about. :eusa_angel:

Enough that some people would be willing to get run over by a bus for it? :eusa_whistle:

Foxy-
I hope the young people pay attention to your last 2 sentences. I've been working for over 30 years. I've only had two jobs where I dreaded starting work in the morning. The first one was when I was a soldier, so after my initial enlistment was up, I moved on. The second one was cold-calling telephone sales. I quit after 2 weeks because I refused to do a job I didn't like.
I've found that as long as I do a job I like doing and am passionate about, I've always made enough money to survive. I tried to make sure my children understand that concept. My oldest obviously does, she recently changed jobs because she had lost the passion for what she was doing after four years. My youngest is in college, so we shall see how she does.

Drugdealer by night* and scientist by day.

My dream job, which hopefully my alter ego is performing in a parallel universe, is either professional nature photographer, or rock guitarist.

* just kidding
