What defines a Patriot?

What a strange subject for this message board where most posters seem to hate their government. Is it possible to hate your government and love your country when the very definition of a country is a politically organized body of people under a single government?

See? You leftists REALLY need to club together and buy a dictionary to share, or something.

Country - 1 : an indefinite usually extended expanse of land : region <miles of open country>
2 a : the land of a person's birth, residence, or citizenship b : a political state or nation or its territory
3 a : the people of a state or district : populace b : jury c : electorate 2
4 : rural as distinguished from urban areas <prefers the country to the city>
5 : country music

Just so you're not confused, the 4th and 5th definitions are not the ones we're talking about here.

The government is not the country. It is, at best, a necessary evil, and liking the government or the bureaucrats who operate the government is not a requirement for loving one's country.

Patriotism is not found in a dictionary, as the more prosaic of those above might have us believe. Patriotism is not jingoistic, as those who wrap themselves in our flag suggest, and to be Patriotic does not require blind agreement or loyalty to any party or person, to any creed or race or gender.
Ones' Patriotism is not proved by hate speech, or lapel pins of our flag. To be patriotic, to love the principles upon which our FF's brought fourth our nation requires this: To be a good citizen, to support the rule of law (i.e. The Constitution) and to make life better for all of our posterity.
In a pluralistic society, there are many ideas and strategies for making life better for us and our children. They must and will be debated, and the measure of their worth will be decided by following generations, generations able to benefit from our mistakes.

Go and thank a vet and show some appreciation and interest.... they may explain a tiny bit about patriotism to you

I am a Vet.

Your a veterenarian?

Nice job, another moronic idiotgram - you're are a class act. Oh, and btw, in which branch of our armed forces did you serve?
And btw, the question in proper English is: You're a ...?

Well....

I guess in order to show respect for those of you who are veterans or still active, it's my duty to say thank you for your service. I was unable to join the military due to medical reasons. Ironically, it was my heart that kept me out...and it takes a lot of heart to be a member of the armed forces.

A patriot, to me, puts his country before himself. In the line of duty or just as a citizen with a big heart. We all have the ability to be great patriots. Wry put it very well.

Love of country and support for its authority and interests.

Y'know, all these thorny little questions like "patriot" and "is" are available in this handy-dandy book we call a "dictionary". Just FYI.
Orwellians hate dictionaries. ;)

Didn't Obama remove the word 'patriot' from the dictionary?

That's only because they refuse to put his picture with the definition. Some claim about truth in advertising or some such.

So do the illiterate, which explains why leftists always need someone to look things up for them.
:eusa_eh:

Ever heard the Right try to define socialism? Hell, they think that Obama's a communist and a Marxist and that's why he has Czars to help implement his totalitarian regime.
