What better thing to do on a day like this than to go shooting?

The temperature has finally risen to a balmy 40 degrees after weeks of icy cold weather, here in SW Wisconsin. So what do we do here when the weather gets up to t-shirt temperature?

Shooting!

I bought this 7.62X39 AKM-47 Hungarian-build last year in anticipation that Hillary would actually get elected. It was put together by Interarms (Highstandard) of Houston, Texas and has Magpul hardware with a Parkerized finish. I opted for something in an AK platform as opposed to an AR, because I like the reliability...

Don't forget to use hearing and eye protection...

So what shall we shoot at? I just happen to have a 12" by 12" square of AR400 tempered steel armor plating about 70 yards up the hill behind my house. That stuff is so hard that I haven't found anything that even leaves a dimple on it...

What's that? You can't see it? Let me zoom in a little closer...

I just expended two magazines into that steel plate. Walmart has 40-round boxes of Tula 7.62X37 FMJ at a little over $9 per box. How much more fun could you possibly have on a balmy day like this?

Amen brother! I just got back in the house after wringing out my new HK P30. It’s in the 50’s today so what better weather to get out and shoot?
Nice rifle by the way!

Is that an ambidextrous safety or a slide lock lever? Nice that it has a hammer, unlike my Glock 19. Is it double-action and does the hammer have a half-cock?

I’ve loved HKs ergos, and quality ever since I first used my USP .45 years ago. Still have it too. I have been accused of being a fanboy; but I just like to stick with what works for me.

That’s the slide lock. And it is indeed ambidextrous. Another neat feature is the decocker. It’s different from my USP.

I carried a Ruger P89 before I got this Glock. It has a decocker on it too but the lever tended to get stuck on a piece of clothing and it would just go "click". I still have the thing stashed behind my monitor but had to retire it after the frame developed a crack from bump-firing it with a 30-round magazine.

Yes, you can bump-fire pistols too.

It’s a DA/SA, with no half cock. They make an LEM variant which i think does have a half cock feature.
This pistol also has a classic safety, just like the one on all my guns. Here’s a pic of it...

Yeah bumping it was probably too much for the Ruger frame. I had a P89 some years back; and if I recall the frame was aluminum...?

I believe it is an aluminum alloy. NOt sure if the frame got a little crack from bump-firing or maybe it was the scope mount I put on it for awhile. The pin that held the mount in had a slight bend to it and I had to hammer it in.

Our local County Sheriff carried a P89 before he got elected, but then changed over to a Kimber 1911. Unusual, since most LEOs carry Glocks.

I live in an open carry state; and I do. But sometimes concealed carry is a bit more appropriate. That’s why I bought the P30. But typically the USP .45 is my EDC...

Tricked-out Ruger 10/22?
Ohh yeah! Built it myself. Custom Kidd Barrel. Kidd trigger group which is super sweet! And a Magpul stock. This gem is a freakin’ laser beam!

Those are pretty cool, there's a lot of accessories you can get for them. I bought one at a garage sale 5 years ago for $30. It was just missing the magazine and barrel band but I got those on Ebay and sold the rifle.

My two favorites are a 1951 Marlin Model 80 and an old Ruger Standard .22 pistol. Got them both at garage sales and have about $50 in both of them...
