I was just planning my vacation reading and going through books, past and present to decide what I want to add to the Kindle. I got to wondering what others are reading. I don't read much fiction and will list only politics-related reading ...

Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free - Charles Pierce

What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America - Thomas Frank (Really looking forward to this one because "... unravels the great political mystery of our day: Why do so many Americans vote against their economic and social interests?..." which I think is utterly fascinating.)

Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and StickYou with the Bill)
- David Cay Johnston

How to Win a Fight With a Conservative (Which I don't think is possible because they come from such an illogical and nonsensical pov) - Daniel Kurtzman

Liars For Jesus: The Religious Right's Alternate Version of American History Vol. 1 - Chris Rodda ("... debunks many of the historical lies invented and used by the Christian nationalist history revisionists in their efforts to further their far right political agenda and destroy the wall of separation between church and state in America. Liars for Jesus is not a book about religion. It is a history book, presenting and fully documenting the true stories and historical facts that are distorted in the "Christian nation" pseudo-history promoted by the religious right.")

I just finished the new Bill Maher, New Rules and shoulda saved it for lightweight vacation reading. Oh well.

So, if you read political books, what's on your nightstand or in your Kindle?

I am reading this message board...what are you reading?

Just got done reading the latest Stephen King brick, pretty good stuff.

Currently, I am re-reading 'the long road to freedom' by Nelson Mandella.

I can see why the OP is so unable to understand any alternative views... he's too scared to read anything that might challenge his opinions.

How sad for him.

Personally I can't stand reading political books.

This is what I'm reading now:

Great Lateral Thinking Puzzles; after The Road I needed something less.........Cormac McCarthy!

Been reading

Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith

Not to mention the scriptures, of Course

And I just finished [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Thou-Shall-Prosper-Commandments-Making/dp/0470485884/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328927481&sr=1-1"]Thou Shall Prosper[/ame] Excellent Book. It's a spiritual look at creating wealth. I found the principles very true.

Not usually my genre, but you have GOT to check this book out:

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Give-Damn-Frustrations-Challenges/dp/1466369094]Amazon.com: Don't Give a Damn: How to Cope with the Fears, Frustrations, and Challenges of Daily Life (9781466369092): Dr. Bill Chun MD: Books[/ame]

A good, simple take on cutting through all the bullshit.

And, speaking of a "brick", The Culture of Make Believe by Derrick Jensen is also huge. Get a Kindle - a lot easier to lug than these huge books.

Jensen's A Language Older than Words is also well done.

Both are non-fiction.

Just got done reading the latest Stephen King brick, pretty good stuff.

Interesting pov and a little bit of a surprise ending.

And, apparently excellent research.

Yes, in the afterword he said he has been writing this book for 30 years. Plenty of time to think about it.

Without looking through the Kindle to be sure, I thought he said he had first had the idea in the mid-70s but felt the wounds were too raw and it went into a drawer to be picked back up many years later.

I liked that he gave copious thanks to his researcher.
