Shutting down the government is nothing but a tactic to scare the public into pressuring their Congresspeople into “doing something.”

So, all right. What isn’t affected? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Postal Service? Unaffected. TSA? Unaffected. Medicare and Medicaid? Unaffected. Social Security checks? Unaffected. Mueller investigation? Unaffected.

In short, a “shutdown” is very rarely a shutdown. The government continues as usual. Entitlement checks go out. Most government services stay open — particularly since this time, there’s funding in place for most of the federal leviathan.

In other words, nothing happens!

Not only that

But the shutdown occurs when most federal agencies are already operating with minimal staff due to the Christmas holidays and end of the year vacations

If non-essential personnel are furloughed during a shutdown, why not furlough them permanently? Are they not non-essential in any case?

When I was in the Marines, and a typhoon would hit Okinawa, all non-essential personnel were restricted to their quarters for the duration of the storm, which could be a day or two. Should all of those members of the military that were non-essential personnel be discharged since they were non-essential.

I wish a POTUS had the balls to shut it all down...shut down mail, send home all Fed ATC people, tell the military to sit in their barracks, send home the border patrol and all Fed Law enforcment. No checks sent out, no passports issued...nothing.

Then see how people feel about shutdowns.

Apples and screwdrivers. The military serves a purpose. Much of the government does not. We could abolish half of all federal agencies and no one would notice.

This is not accurate. While we could and should cut the size of government, there is not an agency that does not affect someone.

Usefulness under the banner of general welfare is the measure. Most people have little personal contact with government agencies beyond entitlements and taxes.

It affects most people negatively. The fact that it "affects" someone isn't sufficient justifation for the spending. No genuine libertarian would try to justify any government spending other than for the military, the police and the courts.

Because you have no idea of what essential means

Essential employees mean serious harm happens if they are sent home. Law enforcement, healthcare, human services

Office workers and parks employees are not life or death positions. Doesn’t mean they are not needed

Shutdowns are a political stunt and nothing more. It gives the MSM fodder to promote government dependency and try to draw sympathy at the same time.

Republicans fear it because the MSM always lays the blame on them, and the Democrats fear it because it would demonstrate just how unnecessary much of our federal government is. The real problem is the Republicans are too scared to call ass on the Democrats.

And yet the media and their imbecile followers go nuts over it.

conservatives dont want government but we dont want grannies wrestling cats for scraps of food on the street either

the GOP is now the party of big government, and its all Trump's fault

Trump did more to destroy limited government conservatism than Soros would have done in a thousand years
