"This is the issue of this election: whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well I’d like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There’s only an up or down: [up] man’s old — old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

In this vote-harvesting time, they use terms like the “Great Society,” or as we were told a few days ago by the President, we must accept a greater government activity in the affairs of the people. But they’ve been a little more explicit in the past and among themselves; and all of the things I now will quote have appeared in print. These are not Republican accusations. For example, they have voices that say, “The cold war will end through our acceptance of a not undemocratic socialism.” Another voice says, “The profit motive has become outmoded. It must be replaced by the incentives of the welfare state.” Or, “Our traditional system of individual freedom is incapable of solving the complex problems of the 20th century.” Senator Fulbright has said at Stanford University that the Constitution is outmoded. He referred to the President as “our moral teacher and our leader,” and he says he is “hobbled in his task by the restrictions of power imposed on him by this antiquated document.” He must “be freed,” so that he “can do for us” what he knows “is best.” And Senator Clark of Pennsylvania, another articulate spokesman, defines liberalism as “meeting the material needs of the masses through the full power of centralized government.”

Well, I, for one, resent it when a representative of the people refers to you and me, the free men and women of this country, as “the masses.” This is a term we haven’t applied to ourselves in America. But beyond that, “the full power of centralized government” — this was the very thing the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments don’t control things. A government can’t control the economy without controlling people. And they know when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector of the economy."

Yes, you were a great man and a great president, Mr. Reagan. In fact if you were in office now, the Middle East would not be revolting. They KNOW you would not want OR tolerate a Muslim Brotherhood, in Egypt. You were no wimp and you were no Muslim sympathizer...
 
I had no issue with President Reagan until he proposed closing down our National Parks. From that point on, I hated the bastard. They are our last pristine places and animal habitats. The last good republican we had was Theodore Roosevelt, a progressive republican.
 
Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

What? Reagan's foreign policy when it comes to the Middle East was short-sighted, misguided, and actually ended up causing harm to the United States.

Did you intentionally forget what happened in Lebanon between June 1982 and February 1984?

There is also Reagan's support of both Iran and Iraq (though mostly Iraq) throughout the Iran-Iraqi war. Did you forget that we supported Saddam Hussein, a dictator (not exactly a freedom loving leader) with weapons and money? In 1982, Iraq was removed from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Or did you forget that? Even after the Iran-Iraqi war, leading up to 1990, we supplied a great deal of the Iraqi military firepower. Which is why when the Gulf War occurred in 1991, a lot of the weapons that Iraq used to invade was Kuwait came from the U.S. Specifically, Ronald Reagan's Administration.

We also shipped Iraq both chemical and biological weapons during the Iran-Iraqi war.

There is also the Iran-Contra incident where Ronald Reagan's Administration through Oliver North and the CIA sold arms to the Iranian Government. The same government that is being criticized as what possibly Egypt could fall into. Ten Reagan Administration officials were convicted, others resigned in disgrace, and the Secretary of Defense got pardoned by George H.W. Bush before he could go to trial for perjury.

There is also the situation with Afghanistan where Ronald Reagan's Administration with the CIA supported the Mujahideen against the Soviet Union. Many of the stinger missiles that are taking down U.S and allied helicopters today in Afghanistan came from Reagan's administration. He even praised the Mujahideen as freedom fighters. Of course, this paved the way for the Taliban to take power because the Reagan Administration did not either care or put the effort into realizing the type of power vacuum they would be creating in the Middle East.

Furthermore, what do you mean by he was no "Muslim sympathizer"? He didn't sympathize with Muslims? Even if they were American citizens? That sentence perhaps all of your post is the one that makes the least amount of sense. The rest can be chalked up to ideology.

The problem is he was never close to being the president that the Rightwing Nut myth makers now make him out to be.
