West Virginia Teachers Win !!

I think there are a lot of politically pushed misconceptions on public schools as well as who to blame. It is always teachers. People ignore the other components needed for success: money and resources, good infrastructure, discipline and safety, community and parental involvement. Success is a very hard metric to define evenly. There is a huge difference between classrooms. Public schools must take all students in their area, including special needs and those with some pretty serious problems. They can not pick and choose like private schools. Parents may often be less involved or lacking a good education themselves and poorly equip to help their kids. There are many reasons for school problems but that is no reason to deny good teachers a reasonable wage. I posted a link comparing average salaries. Against comparable occupations...requiring a 4 year degree....it is pathetically low. A landscape architect earns more.

And are US public schools so bad? Depends where you are. But it’s easier to blame it all on teachers and deny them decent pay.

Why does a messely give percent raise her some of your undies in a bundle? Non issue... we have bigger fish to get than a few teachers getting a slight raise. You want better results send them smarter kids. Nobody has asked the kids to work hard just blame an easy target.

If one is going to cry and whine like a little lot about this then get off your last rear and become a teacher and fix the problem. You sound like a typical lazy CEO who is upset about having to pay an employer.

"money and resources" - compared to the rest of the world, our schools are flooded with money. We are getting shit returns for what we are paying. The most expensive schools, among the worst results in the west. The issue is clearly NOT throwing more money at it. We need to deal with the horrible return we're getting on what we're paying now.

"good infrastructure" - That just means money, addressed above

"discipline and safety, community and parental involvement" - leftists and teacher unions continually fight any teacher responsiveness to parents or outside influences and want total control of the classroom. What is taught, what is read, parental choices. Not if the teachers have a say, it's up to them.

Teachers are not the only problem, but they are the major problem. The unions don't fight for better education, they fight for the selfish interests of the teachers at everyone else's expense, particularly the children.

There are a lot of good teachers, but there are a lot of bad ones and it's virtually impossible to get rid of them. Teachers are only good if they choose to be good. Many do not make that choice

Teachers in my state, WV, are among the lowest paid in the country. Average salary is $46,400 and average starting salary $32,500. That is extremely low. OK is worse, $44,100 and $31,600. They require a higher education degree and are burdened with student loans.

Source: Teacher Salaries in America

In WV not only are the salaries crap but state employee health insurance costs were do to go up a great deal (due to legislative incompetence over the years) meaning that the measly 1% raise would be nothing and the increased cost would actually reduce their pay to a level lower then their starting point.

How to you expect to recruit and retain quality teachers with that? It has been 14 years since they had a raise. Good for them for striking, they had tremendous community support. Teachers these days get so little respect yet they are expected to perform miracles. I hope the OK teachers strike as well.

And the average home cost is $150K, so lower pay is justified.

The average salary would get a home around 109,000 and the starting salary a home around 50,000.
Dufus thinks pay of teachers where the average home cost is $150K should be the same as where it is $800K. :lmao:

Kids in other first world nations are light years ahead of US kids in education.

West Virginia teachers' strike ends as lawmakers accept pay demands

A victory for people power. Hats off to these guys for holding out for a proper deal. You can beat the man if you stick together.
Now tell us the quality of education these teachers are responsible for, Tommy.

45th out of 50.

Should have fired them all and hired non union teachers interested in kids education.
How can one xpect the best teachers to come and work at the next to lowest salary in the nation?

Conservatives hate education and that hate is manifested in the way they regard educators.

Who do you think pays the teachers salaries? Poor school districts can't afford to pay teachers sky high salaries. Teachers in poor districts can expect to be paid what the district can afford, they are free to quit and go teach in some other district or state.

Teachers are overpaid considering the terrible performance of our educational system and that they get three months off every summer.

Taxpayers deserve better than we're getting for what we're paying now

Its far worse than you think. Its corrupted. Young energetic full of promise teachers get paid next to nothing BECAUSE the layer of LARD at the top, teachers with tenure and seniority gobble up all the lions share of the money. Worse teachers who are sick of teaching they give them even higher paid non teaching "administrator" jobs on the taxpayers dime. You want to talk about a layer of pure lard look at the ratio of "administrators" to teachers in some areas its 1 "administrator" for every 2 teachers holy shit.

Not paying teachers what they deserve will only bring in less qualified teachers. Then you would slam them for not producing highly successful students.
Rinse spin repeat.
And then they leave....but that's what they want, I guess.
We have a conservative government in the UK and they hate education that they cant make money out of. They hve squeezed school budgets for years now. Mainly so that they can give tax cuts to their rich donors.

They are not Conservative there is not a Right-Winger in your Government, you have a Government of Cuckservatives who are more concerned with Political Correctness and not wanting to offend Transgenders, faggots, Muslims, Africans etc, your Education Secretary is more concerned with allowing the LGBTQ thing in schools as she's a Carpet Muncher herself so why wouldn't she be pushing the Propaganda.

Did you private school teach you to be a bigot or is that all on your own?

Did your school make you a faggot, or did you do that all on your own?

you should get a refund from yours as you have no ability to think critically.

saying teachers aren't the sole reason for student failure and success isn't saying teachers have nothing to do with same.

a well taught person wouldn't have to be told this.

they would know.

The teachers are responsible for the childrens education when they are in the school, the parents are not in the school with them. You in typical Leftist fashion just want bad teachers let off the hook.

Also in typical Leftist fashion you are up your own buttocks and patronising. Time for you to boil your head or whatever Troll Boi.

what a tremendous insight- i want bad teachers let off the hook

i never would have known if you hadn't applied your own rather facile brand of pretzel logic to my post

thanks for sharing it

All the Leftists have been defending these teachers in this thread even though West Virginia is 51 out of 51 in the table.
In Leftism the goal is to produce uneducated sheep.

no... that's what trumptards do. why would we want our kids as uneducated as trump voters.

silly

"why would we want our kids as uneducated as trump voters"

Exactly. The most salient problematic characteristic of Trump voters is their lack of education. Not something anyone should want for their kids. Children of the Left are better educated, and, therefore, better able to think logically, critically and with knowledge and circumspection instead of ignorance, bias, and irresponsibility.

Leader Of West Virginia Teachers Union Discusses Resolution To Strike

If you dig a bit deeper into the story it is clear that the West Virginia teachers have been unfairly maligned.

West Virginia has 700 teacher vacancies, and teachers have had to combine classes. They've been asked to take on subjects that they might not be certified in or trained to teach.

What a nightmare.

Its little wonder that their schools are falling behind. Better pay will attract more applicants and standards will rise.
