NATO, the European Union and the United States called for an immediate end to fighting in Georgia's South Ossetia region and urged direct talks between the sides.

Russia sent forces into Georgia on Friday to repel a Georgian assault on the breakaway region and Georgia's pro-Western president said the two countries were at war.

"We are very closely following the situation, and the NATO Secretary General (Jaap de Hoop Scheffer) calls on all sides for an immediate end of the armed clashes and calls for direct talks between the parties," a NATO statement said.

News reports are saying more than 100 dead already. Russian aircraft bombing Georgian bases. Georgia has applied for NATO membership. Maybe Russia is trying to do a little house cleaning before it's too late.

BTW, Gunny, a 1,000 Marines were just in Georgia training Georgian troops.

You've hit the nail squarely on the head! In April Nato said Georgia would be allowed to join the alliance at some point, pissing off Russia big time. Following this, Russia, who opposes any eastward expansion of NATO, stepped up ties with the separatists in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

At the same time, they have been issuing Russian passports to South Ossetia's citizens. Over half the population of 70,000 now has a Russian passport. What better way to justify an attack by being able to say they are protecting Russian citizens.

BTW, latest reports say the death toll is over 1,400 civilians.

Lol.

I find the whole situation over there confusing....we're supposed to be friends with Georgia...but aren't we friends with Russia, too?

But invading Iraq is ok?

This thread's not about Iraq. But feel free to reconcile this deflective trolling with your comment in the pointless, insulting thread you started on the topic in which you denigrate Bush for "only" sending an envoy.

Make up your fucking mind, junior. That is, if you can possibly connect that waste of matter to reality long enough to get a clue.

It's not that confusing really. Those who ruled old Soviet Union were primarly part of the KGB brotherhood. These people truly believe they are the only ones capable of running mother Russia. After the fall of the Soviet Union there were people running amok everywhere within the country. Even today, it's a helter skelter wild west kind of place. The chaos allowed many of the previously occupied countries to break away like Georgia and many others. Some have become very prosperous and demoncratic places, some became nother forms of totalitarian regimes, and others have never gotten onto firm footing. As time went by, the Russian population became overwhelmed by the chaos and began welcoming anyone who could just bring about some order. This is where Putin arrived with his old KGB partners. He has brought about order and by nationalizing the oil industry and its wealth he has slowly re-built a nation where a majority have once again become dependent on the state. That is how he is capable of guaranteeing the high percentages of votes he gets. (Kind of like the democrats in Louisiana) Those who are capable, he lets go wild and make as much money and live as lavishly as they can. They are no threat because they have no reason to complain. With the general population in his back pocket and the intelligensia busy living it up, he has no opposition. This also allows him to harrass and intimidate the surrounding former soviet countries at will. South Ossetia sets smack in the middle of Georgia. Look at a map. The Russians have been pushing for this because Georgia has the potential of being a economic powerhouse and Putin doesn't want any competition next door.

I've got mixed feelings. Part of me wants to see a resolution to the conflict. The other part of me says American firms should arm the Georgians with as many guns as possible and let them kill as many Russians as they can....payback's a bitch.

Yes, they could kill as many Russians as they can, but such a situation would be futile. The Georgians wouldn't stand a chance. They would be overrun within a short period of time by Russia's superior numbers.

Georgia supports Israel.

Jews don't like Russia.

Jews run U.S. military policy.

Both Georgia and Russia have oil/port interests.

S. Ossetia supports Russia.

S. Ossetia was a part of Georgia.

Russian people are being killed by Georgians in S. Ossetia.

I'm still processing. For pro-white reasons, I'm usually pretty skeptical of claims that NATO or "the West" is really on whites' side; more often, it's on the JEWS side. The Jews can't stand Putin because he's a white gentile bad-ass with nukes who rules over a country liberated from 100-odd years of Jewish-system rule. Problem!

Stay on topic.........this isnt' about Iraq. We did not invade Iraq to make it the 51st state....

Learn to discuss what is actually being discussed, it'll make you, at least, appear intelligent. You have a one track mind dude.

CNN really pissed me off the other day. A news anchor was interviewing the Georgian PRESIDENT about the incident and was being a real asshole to him. The anchor was extremely rude and treated the whole situation as if it was Georgia's fault and they were the bad guys. He was obviously biased. The president was well composed and was doing what he could to explain the situation. The CNN anchor just kept bombarding him with accusations. The president looked fed up with the reporter, but kept his composure and continued to attempt to explain the situation to him. At one point, the reporter started asking him why they are shooting down Russian jets (as if it was a bad thing). The Georgian President tried to explain to him that these jets were indiscriminately bombing civilians. He explained that they bombed a completely residential neighborhood...killing hundreds. They bombed a vaction lodge/hotel killing many civilans. The anchor kept trying to pin something on him. The Georgian president finally said, "This is not a Georgian aggression...the Russian military is in OUR country..." He continued to explain that Russian civilians are not dying and Georgian troops are not in Russia, Russia is in Georgia.

This is typical of the Russians.

(this isn't the same interview...I'm actually wondering if it's doctored. He seems to be saying the exact same thing as he was in the other interview, but all of a sudden--now there's a different reporter asking questions.)---The reporter on this interview is actually pretty nice...I can't find the other one...)

Now we are getting nearer the truth.

Russian jets targeted a key oil pipeline with over 50 missiles in a weekend bombing raid in Georgia that raised fears the conflict will tighten Moscow's stranglehold on Europe's energy supplies.

Georgia is a crucial link in a three country energy corridor vital to Western Europe's oil and gas supply. The £2 billion pipeline is the only major conduit for Central Asian resources not under Russian control.

Russia can't bear the thought that there is a pipeline operated by BP that by-passes their control.

This is typical of Russia, they did the same thing in Afghanistan and Czhechoslovakia.

Russia has no business intervening. Plain and simple.

Really? Russia can't intervene when Georgia attacks a semi-autonomous province which contains a great many Russian citizens?

Russia is using hugely disproportionate force, but assuming that Georgia initiated this conflict (details are still a bit sketchy), it seems like Russia does have a legitimate interest in the region. This, of course, does NOT give them the right to use the force that they are using, and they need to agree to the cease-fire immediatelly.

Oh...and as for comparisons to Iraq, the legitimacy of Russias "invasion" is exponentially greater than the United States into Iraq. So those who cheered war in Iraq can shut the hell up about rebuking Russia.

Ohh I see if we had just made all the Iraqis citizens first we would have been ok, got ya.

Using your logic Mexico can invade us any time they want cause they have 20 Million citizens in this country.

Right, because thats the only difference. Who was sending troops into Iraq that we needed to defend the Iraqis from again?

Using your logic Mexico can invade us any time they want cause they have 20 Million citizens in this country.

And exactly what danger are these Mexican nationals in, while residing in the US?

Pesky little facts which you consistently miss, eh RGS?
