We’re All Gonna Die: France Permanently Cancels Fuel Tax Hike

France was in revolt over the planned gas tax (carbon tax):

"More than a quarter-million people across France joined protests on Saturday against planned hikes in gas taxes."

Hundreds of Thousands in France Protest Taxes by Blocking Roads

"French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced that he was abandoning a proposed fuel-tax hike amid fears of more unrest after weeks of nationwide protests that have already cost several lives and millions of euros in damage."

"The green gas tax was due to increase next month but a grassroots movement sprang up to protest what was seen by many as an attempt to restrict driving."

Planet Can Burn, Shows French Government Caving To Protests Demanding End To Green Gas Taxes

Make no mistake, the French were protesting a carbon tax:

"In a statement on Wednesday evening, the Elysée said that Philippe and the president, Emmanuel Macron, “both wished the increase in the carbon tax be removed” from the budget for 2019."

The sad thing about the carbon tax was that the French government wanted the tax to balance its financial budget, it WAS NOT TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT:

"Meanwhile, Mr Philippe warned that by reversing the tax increase, the government will be forced to cut its budget. Mr Macron has made fiscal discipline one of the hallmarks of his economic policy after his predecessors repeatedly missed EU deficit targets.

Then, if the taxes go down, public spending will have to go down because we do not want to leave debt to our children,” the prime minister said. “This debt is already considerable.”"

I can't get the link to work. The title of the article is "French government suspends fuel tax rise after riots" dated December 5th.

Why did the French government call it a carbon tax? Because they were hoping that people would be more willing to pay it.

Fking sad.

What makes you think it could not do both?

Can you state how the French government planned to spend the planned carbon tax to improve the environment?

My search didn't turn up a single article on how the tax was to be spent to improve the environment and I searched both in the English and French language press. Maybe you can point to something. I look forward to your guidance.

Really? It was a fuel tax. The intent was to reduce the consumption of fuel to reduce CO2 emissions.

Dang s0n....you really do have a pronounced inability to think on the margin.

You progressives.....if the intentions are good, do it! Screw the results....they dont matter. Nobody wants to shell out for the global warming cause except the k00ks: those who cant think on the margin. The evidence is profound. Profound.

You dont get it guy....you never will.

"It was a fuel tax."

You are wrong.

The tax called TICPE is not a new tax. The fact is that the French government understood that it was an easy way to raise more money for the government's general budget. The amounts this tax generates are so large that it is the fourth or fifth most important source of revenue for the French government.

TICPE is set based on each liter sold, and not the base price which fluctuates according to market conditions. The more liters of fuel sold the more money the French government takes in.

Macron wants to reduce France's deficit to 3% as is required for EU members. TICPE was his way of doing it. The rest is greenwash.

Good deal. Maybe the French revolution against the phony junk-science lie of "man-made global warming will finally put an end to that nonsense.

Dream on.

Take a single data set, make, two copies, send one to a meteorologist, send the other copy to a "Climatologist" and ask them both to extrapolate future data points. The climatologist will come up the longer horizon of prediction, which is mathematically impossible.

That is your opinion and you have no evidence to support it.

Edouard Philippe is France's prime minister. He wasn't saying that rolling back the gas tax would cause further harm to the environment, he said:

"...that by reversing the tax increase, the government will be forced to cut its budget.

His many statements point that their concern is for the budget, not the environment.

Again, you create a false dichotomy. It is entirely possible to be concerned about both issues. Besides, as I'm sure you've heard before, science doesn't care what you think.

I'm starting to see why some people think you are funny.

The French government speaks about their biggest concern in rolling back the gas tax is the general budget and the deficit and you claim that I fail to see that they are equally concerned with the environment.

Can you share a quote from the prime minister or president saying that rolling back the gas tax will prove damaging to the environment? The president and prime minister have both spoken recently at great length on rolling back the gas tax. No concern was expressed.

Anyone who doesn't believe AGW doesn't understand that basic scientific principles and overwhelming evidence provide the best method for producing correct results.

Exactly. Despite the excessively high taxes in France, they still need more money.

This is the universal problem with all socialism.... you always run out of other people's money to spend.

This is why California has the highest taxes in the US, and still is broke.

Socialism never works. Never. It will always descend into chaos and anarchy, because you can't tax yourself into prosperity.
