By eliminating the deduction for most state and local taxes, an individual making a yearly salary of $1,000,000 -- a figure not uncommon in the financial industry -- would owe the Internal Revenue Service an additional $21,000, according to a preliminary analysis by accounting firm Marcum LLP.
You always hear from the left that the RICH should pay more. Here it is. No longer will rich states, which tax the shit out of the rich in the first place, get a tax break so the federal income tax gets short changed. Are you happy that the rich no longer get this tax loophole?

Punishment of the Democrat states, called Salt. They want to raise sales tax and get rid of state and local taxes, which hurt those who are middle income and below, the aged and the disabled.

Its the rich who take the itemized deductions, not middle and low incomes.

If your state legislature raises sales and local taxes vote them out.

It will be on the 2018 ballot (hopefully). In Mi they also close SOS offices and made them hard to get to, and closed polling places in the Democratic areas.

This is the dirty little secret of high taxes. While republicans generally oppose higher taxes, the fact remains that they play the same game.

And the game is this.... When they increase taxes, they then turn around, and offer tax dedications for support.

So while they face the general public pretending to support higher taxes "Let's tax the rich to support our programs!" and all the mindless left-wingers squeal for joy, they turn right around to the rich and say "I support this tax deduction. Support me!" and gain millions in donations.

It's a brilliant game, playing the mindless stupid voters into believe the rich will pay for everything they want.

In reality, even the most ardent Democrat knows that jacking up taxes will simply drive the rich away. They know that sky high taxes will never support all the programs people want.

So they developed this brilliant strategy where they can convince the mindless left-wingers to vote for them by proclaiming themselves supporters of high taxes on the rich, while at the same time 'selling' tax dedications to those who are actually rich in exchange for funding their campaigns, and at the same time avoiding mass capital flight which would damage the economy, and of course more importantly to politicians, ruin their careers.

This problem will never go away until the left-wing wakes up from their delusions that they can increase taxes, and not have unintended consequences.

Well I did have to work for my money, and also invest it.. But I did spent 5 1/2 years in Saudi Arabia, where I didn't have to pay state or federal income taxes.. That was one hell of a loophole that I used. Are you jelly?

Andaronjim, deductions of taxable federal income taxes proportional to state and local taxes,(i.e. SALT) paid by the federal tax payers, assist state and local governments' seeking tax revenue; reducing or eliminating those deductions would hinder state and local governments abilities to collect sufficient tax revenues.

Do you believe the government department that provide the services necessary for education and safety will better serve their local jurisdictions if we fund them less? Do you believe lesser repairs and maintenance of public infrastructures would not be reduced if we fund them less?

The deduction's purpose is to some extent promote spendings of SALTs' for their population's net benefit; wouldn't reducing that deduction benefit to some extent discourage such spendings for their populations' net benefits?

Respectfully, Supposn

The blue states give far more to the federal government ...
ScienceRocks, eliminating federal income taxes deductions proportional to state and local taxes,(i.e. SALT) was inserted within proposed tax bill, for the purpose of reducing the decade's net federal budget 's deficits if the tax bill is enacted. Congress has restricted the “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act's”, (if the bill's enacted), not to exceed $1.5 trillion dollars, (i.e.$1,500,000,000,000.00) net anticipated increased federal debts over the next decade.

I agree with those contending this provision of the bill will to some extent discourage state and local taxes,(i.e. SALTs) spendings for their populations' net benefits? Thus consequentially to some extent

be of net detriment of our entire nation.

You're correct, Blue states do contribute more, and Red states do contribute less to federal tax revenues per capita than the funds and benefits per capita they receive from the federal government.

[The delegates to the Constitutional Convention agreed that the federal government had supreme jurisdiction over interstate (and foreign) commerce, transactions, and agreements. The delegates intelligently negotiated and able to persuade delegates from commercially more advantageous states to compromised their states' advantages in favor of our federal government. I'm among those that are pleased with how they accomplished their purposes.]

The current U.S. Senate could have identified the more grievous per capita differences of federal funds proportionally augmenting Salts' spendings for particular purposes. In many cases for specific purposes, capping those federal per capita spendings would reduce federal spending while continuing to fully augment poorer states' spendings for their populations, and for our nation's net benefits.

I regret that the Senate did not choose to do so within the current draft of their tax bill.

Respectfully, Supposn
