We shouldn't ban people except for instances of extreme filth. That's what they do at du. We have to be better. This is not a criticism of any specific mod act, just a general thought.

on the other hand: who the hell am I?

If you ban every nitwit, you'll have nobody to debate with, and what fun is it to just slap each other on the back and congratulate yourselves for thinking alike?

But, at the same time, having been here from the very beginning of this board, I know how debates can dissolve from friendly disagreement to personal attacks very quickly. Sometimes banning is simply necessary, I think.

We don't and have not in my memory ever banned anybody for political view, its when they flame for no known reason, or flame without putting in any time(newbies) that it becomes potentially neccessary.

Extreme filth? RWA that reminds me of something you once said many moons ago, maybe I should ban you.

putting in time? this isn't a good old boys club. nor should it be. WE should defeat idiots with sound arguing instead of abusing mod powers. I understand that using the hierarchy and time served is the only way some people can inflate their intelligence in their own mind, it's just sad.

RWA, if you have an issue with the way a mod operates, talk to Jim or John.

I repeat, there was no issue with any specific mod action. Just a general thought on the kind of board we want to have.

I can agree with you here to a degree RW but you have to understand there are instances when people register just to be wise asses! Take Itsthetruth for instance, he was only interested in causing trouble and was a daily member over at DU. They like to send over some of their cronies now and then. Others you have to nip the attitude before they think they can get away with whatever they want. Edward for instance has received a 1 week time out, perhaps when he returns he will have a better attitude. Nobody, and I mean nobody gets banned without being warned first unless me or Jim have made the banning.

One man's wise ass is another man's sage.

RWA i'm not tolerating your shit any longer, you got a problem with me be a man and say so instead of pussyfooting around. You talk about sound arguing......HAH, you don't know the first thing. Why don't you just leave the moderating to the heavyweights and you stick to stroking your rod err ego by repeating the day's monologue on Rush.

BTW how is the psychoanalysis going?

Hell RWA i'm gonna chalk this stupid shit of yours up to plain old petty jealousy, what a tool.

Here's a story about another board I go to:

This board was not political in any way, just a few (maybe 25) friends who got together through another board. Anyway, everyone there used their real names and there was no banning allowed, so as to create a nice environment, like I guess what RWA wants.

About six months ago, some random guys started getting on there, posting under other people's names, posting pics of dead bodies, etc. No biggie, we just ignored them.

Then, when they weren't happy with being ignored, they hacked into the guy who owns the board's account and got not only his home phone # and address, but his parents' number and address as well (the guy's in his 30's, so his parents are probably in their 70's or so).

Long story short, they started making harassing phone calls, giving out their info on porn sites, other boards, telling people to harass them, etc. The end result was the board getting shut down and the guy pressing charges against them.

Point being, this was a board with about 30 members that wasn't listed on any search engines or anything. This board is 1000X more public than that one, and as such needs to be moderated with some care.

That said, no, people shouldn't get banned just because of their point of view, but I haven't heard about that happening yet, and I've been here from day one.

But when we ban for light flaming we look like wussies, something like du.

When did that happen?

I was at a Canadian Lib board yesterday, and a MOD started flamming me right away. Not only was his flamming immediate, he was gross and ignorant.

Just thought I'd share that. :bat:

Very rarely does it happen for just flaming, most of them continued to break rules even after being warned. If it were just for flaming I would of banned you along time ago when you used to enjoy flaming me, but now your on the inside so you should see the difference!

Are you saying I'm a good old boy now? Cool. I've never been on the inside!

Can I still be mean due to my high cute factor? :halo:

Pretty please?

In all fairness RW the creators of this board seem to be very tolerant of trouble makers, giving them every oportunity to behave themselves.
