In the wake of a monstrous crime like a madman’s mass murder of defenseless women and children at the Newtown, Conn., elementary school, the nation’s attention is riveted on what could have been done to prevent such a massacre.

Luckily, some years ago, two famed economists, William Landes at the University of Chicago and John Lott at Yale, conducted a massive study of multiple victim public shootings in the United States between 1977 and 1995 to see how various legal changes affected their frequency and death toll.

They have these things called "Volunteer Ambulance Services" and "Volunteer Fire Departments". It wouldn't be too far a stretch to have a group of armed volunteers to trade time in schools. They can't afford cops or security guards without guns. A standing military police force would be a ridiculous, Orwellian, response.

Take responsible people, and let them volunteer. Eliminate the fun free zones first of course. They're not "gun free" if the criminals can still get in the joint.

Where do they draw their authority? Are they deputized to stop fights? How do they handle drugs? The liability is going to crush this movement. Nice sentiment, but doomed from the start.
