We Did Not Ask for This Fight, But We Will Not Run From It’

- Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, sent a letter on Friday to all the Catholic bishops of the United States reasserting the conviction of the Catholic Church that it will not yield to the Obama administration’s command—issued in the form of a Health and Human Services regulation implementing the president’s health-care plan--that Catholics and Catholic institutions must violate the teachings of their faith by purchasing and providing health insurance plans that pay for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortifacients.

“We have made it clear in no uncertain terms to the government that we are not at peace with its invasive attempt to curtail the religious freedom we cherish as Catholics and Americans,” Cardinal Dolan wrote his brother bishops.

“We did not ask for this fight, but we will not run from it,” he said.

“Since January 20, when the final, restrictive HHS Rule was first announced,” Cardinal Dolan wrote, “we have become certain of two things: religious freedom is under attack, and we will not cease our struggle to protect it.”

I like him too.

Never mind, that it is the first time since our Government started with health care, that all religions were exempt from government health care policies, that went against their ideology. They respected and followed the 1st amendment.
This is the first time, that the government is forcing health care policies against religious insurers doctrine.
This is not the first time this administration has violated the constitution, they have done so several times.
The 1st amendment is the law of the land and trumps any government ideology.

Dolan is keeping this issue where it belongs. While the liberasl yell and complain about limbaugh and such, this is what the fight is about "Religios freedom"

Where does it end? The government might decide circumcision is not good and ban it for people who want it, this is where big government will take us. this fight is about Liberty!!

You are a day late and a some foreskin short. San Francisco has already tried to outlaw it.

You mean the government might ban the unnecessary mutilation of children's genitals?

oh, sweet C'Thulu, really?

That would be absolutely horrible.

I am so going to burst into flames over all of this!!! What the hell am i doing defending the chruch.... the rat bastards!!

I agree... i hope they stand their ground and fight to the death.

All the Church has to do in order to avoid going against its principles here is divest itself of all non-religious business interests. The regulations fully exempt the Church itself, just not its Church-owned schools and hospitals. Problem solved.

We Did Not Ask for This Fight, But We Will Not Run From It’

Actually they did ask for the fight, considering the fact 28 states already have the same requirement, well before the HHS policy was announced.

Or, better yet, simply apply the policy consistently, since many Catholic-affiliated institutions already provide birth control as part of employees’ compensation regarding health insurance premium payments.

"We've always had contraceptive birth control included in our health care benefits," said Michelle Michaud, a labor and delivery nurse at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, Calif. "It's something that we've come to expect for ourselves and our family."

This, then, brings us to the obvious question: if Catholic-affiliated employers have already been subjected to a birth control/health insurance requirement rule in 28 states, why have none objected before now? Why is this all of a sudden an issue for the right?

Answer: because until now it didn’t involve the Obama Administration during an election year.

This is purely a partisan issue, having nothing to do with ‘religious freedom.’

Here's what annoys me about so-called "Pro-Lifers".

They are all for the fetuses until they become babies. Then they are someone else's problem.

Now, I will give the Catholic Church credit that they are on the right side of the issue of taking care of babies after they are born, but a lot of other "Pro-Lifers", not so much.

Are you calling the Cardinal a liar? Do you think we should shut down all Catholic religious schools and hospitals? Do you think the government has the right to mandate what religious institutions must provide? Those links don't really mean much.

San Fransisco already has.
