War is a nasty beast, to be avoided if at all possible, but always preferable to surrender, a tactic and trait which the French and many Europeans developed to a remarkably high degree in the early 1940's.
There was once an American politician who remarked that the war he was embarking on would be "A kinder, gentler war."It turned out that he was just speaking nonsense to quiet the quivering anal sphincters over at the NYT, the WaPo, ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC and of course, the DNC, for when it came time to wage war for real after the events on the Highway Of Death from Kuwait City into Iraq, he shut the war down to avoid the appearance of barbarity, achieving no real results from the war.
There is only one real objective once you enter into war, that is to kill the enemy and to continue killing the enemy as quickly, as mercilessly, as remorselessly as you can until the enemy either ceases to exist or the enemy begs you to cease and desist, promising to lay down all arms, turning over their women and children along with all their wealth and resources, while promising to offer no other resistance of any kind to whatever you wish. Then and only then, can you demonstrate any good will or magnanimity.
