Was FDR the best President in American history?

FDR was the absolute best president the US has ever had. He is likely to retain that position for all time. Because of FDR, the US government became the guarantor of the general welfare as the Founders intended. FDR made the Constitution work.
So spake our local socialist support group.
Amen.

More than any president, FDR turned the US into the global power we are today. look at where the US was before he took office to where we were when he died.
The US moved from a sleeping giant to a military and economic SuperPower

Definitely one of our greatest Presidents

and what has that done for us besides further bankrupt us and ensure we are snarled in wars all over the world?

Liberty, not national power, are measures of greatness for a country. FRD removed liberties at an alarming rate, thus he was a terrible president.

Compare the GDP of the US compared to GDP of other world powers in 1933. Also compare our military strength

The US now has three times the GDP of any other nation. The economic infrastrure build while FDR was president is still in existence today. It may ensnarl us in in wars around the world, but compare the global stability today to what it was in 1933. The US acting as superpower has stabilized the world

FDR isn't even in the running for best President, though I wouldn't say he was worse than Lincoln. I would have to say the honor of best President in history goes to Grover Cleveland, though even he wasn't great.

Agree totally.

Being a superpower does suck. The rest of the world want you to solve all the problems in the world and spend all the money to solve those problems. Nope. Sure don't work for me.

FDR rates near the bottom of my list also. Everyone gives him credit for ending the GD. BS. The only reason it ended was because of WWII.

He also was instremental in the entltlements that we have today. They suck too. I would rather keep my money and not have to share with all those who forgot to get a job. Have kids they can't afford and who are a drain on my hard earned money. Nope. Entitlements suck even worse than being a super power.

War spending doesn't end depressions any more than domestic spending does.

Look at him, he's proud of the thing that made the USA one of the most hated nations on earth, and the prime reason the USA is a terror target.

The US is far from one of the most hated nations on earth.

Fact is that the US has stabilized the world since we became a Superpower. If you look at the wars and skirmishes that took place before 1945 and compare to what we have today...The US has made the world a safer place

Mayby not. But the creation of the machines for war, the guns for war. The clothing for war. The everything for war sure does.

No, it doesn't. It just diverts capital from where it should be going in the private sector. There were mass shortages and rationing at home during World War 2 because of that very reason. People were much worse off during the war than they were beforehand.

Er... all that does is misdirect resources away from consumer wants & needs and into things that either destroy capital goods or are themselves destroyed. War isn't a productive endeavor unless of course you're waging war of conquest to steal the productive endeavors of other peoples and even then it's only temporarily productive.

Well when you put it like that...

FDR was an abomination to the Constitution and free enterprise. His programs lengthened economic problems then and still harm us today. His thirst for world power has been unmatched by any world leader with the possible exception of Hilter.

US GDP (adjusted to 2005 $$) once FDR took office

Measuring Worth - U.S. GDP

1933 $716B
1934 $ 794B
1935 $ 865B
1936 $ 977B
1937 $ 1028B
1938 $ 992B
1939 $ 1072B

Even before WWII started in 1939 the US GDP rose 49% under FDR

Throw that in a terrorist issue thread sometime. Perhaps try it in an Iraq War thread?

Major increases in Steel Industry, Motor Vehicle production facilities, Aircraft production facilities, technology gains across all spectrum's, Massive increase in ship building production and facilities. Massive production of Ocean going tankers and Cargo vessels. Tons of new Hospitals as well. Hell you know why we have an Interstate Highway system? Because Eisenhower had to ride across the US on the crappy system we had before that. So when he was President he lobbied for and had created an interstate highway system for NATIONAL DEFENSE. Did you know original one mile out of every 3 had to be a straight away with no bridge overpasses? That was so in case of war the Interstate could be used across the country as emergency Airstrips.

What is sad is most of those businesses FAILED by the early 60's to invest in their own upkeep and failed miserably because of it. As for US flagged ships our Merchant shipping is gone because of onerous regulations, taxes and duties. And our Car manufacturers are on the brink of collapse because of the Unions and now the Government supporting said Unions.

Yeah because everybody knows that you can't build any of that stuff unless you go to war with somebody.

Of course not.

It is a fine example of our use of our status as Superpower
When Iraq invaded Kuwait, Bush used our position as Superpower to force Iraq to give it back
