Sorry they weren't progressive liberals, those didn't come out until the 1900s. They were classical liberals who favored a liberal style democracy which culminated in our constitution and radical liberals because they were willing to fight and lay down their lives for what they believed in.

True. Classic liberalism in that era promoted limited government and was based on natural law. Neither party understands that concept today, imo.
