Downturn's Ugly Trademark: Steep, Lasting Drop in Wages - WSJ.com

But the decline in their fortunes points to a signature outcome of the long downturn in the labor market. Even at times of high unemployment in the past, wages have been very slow to fall; economists describe them as "sticky." To an extent rarely seen in recessions since the Great Depression, wages for a swath of the labor force this time have taken a sharp and swift fall.

well sort of. The whole purpose of globalization was to raise wages in developing nations while reducing wages and esp costly benefits and entitlements in developed nations.

It's called labor commodification, and it shifts all the power away from labor and toward capital.

Why anybody is the slightest bit surprised by our declining living standards is a mystery. And this is a permanent trend btw, not a blip.

With the developing nations earning their share of the world's wealth the US is not gonna be able to suck up 25% of the world's resources.

The days of Americans being in a class unto themselves is over.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT REQUIRES LUCASFILM TO STOP ENTERING INTO ANTICOMPETITIVE EMPLOYEE SOLICITATION AGREEMENTS

Settlement Preserves Competition for Digital Animation Employees

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice announced today that it has reached a settlement with Lucasfilm Ltd. that prevents it from entering into agreements restraining employee recruitment. The department said that the agreement between Lucasfilm and Pixar eliminated important forms of competition to attract highly skilled employees and, overall, significantly diminished competition to the detriment of affected employees who were likely deprived of information and access to better job opportunities.

that is an outstanding example of a direct attempt to disempower labor via an actual cartel style wage fixing conspiracy. Totally outside the bounds of a free market.

Good score.

The pity is..I see this all the time in the IT market. It's much more subtle and widespread. However, part of it was brought on by some of the techs themselves..because they refused to commit to any company and stay on..sometimes for decades..as consultants.

But this is good news, it will allow us to compete in the global marketplace. right?

I have said for a couple of decades that lower standards of living for Americans is the inevitable outcome of globalization.
