Waaaaaaa...Durbin Apologies

Typical spineless politician. Can't stand the heat, so they back down. Stand up for what you believe in!

Actually, I almost agree with Gabby on this point. Politicians don't do or say ANYTHING anymore without thinking about it. Durbin knew EXACTLY what he was saying when he compared the treatment of prisoners at GITMO to what the Nazi's, Stalin, or the Khmer Rouge did to their victims. He should have the balls to defend it if he feels so strongly about it.

My guess is that he caught wind of public opinion...for instance this Rasmussan poll that shows that 70% of people polled feel that the prisoners are being treated appropriately or better than they should be, and that approximately 69% of people polled found his comparision inappropriate...and his advisors told him to issue his phony apology.

Where I disagree with Gabby is the notion that this is, in anyway, a real apology.

Let's say I called you an asshole. You might get upset or offended by that and demand I apologize. If I apologized to you by saying, "I'm sorry you got upset about my calling you an asshole." you and I would both know that I wasn't apologizing for calling you a nasty name...in fact...I wasn't apologizing for anything really, other than the fact that you chose to make a stink about it. NOT A REAL APOLOGY.

Durbin's statement, "Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line, to them I extend my heartfelt apologies." Is just another example of this crappy, pseudo-apology. I, for one, do not accept it, neither do the men and women serving in the military that I speak to every day.

Durbin compared small incidents of mild abuse to some of the most heinous crimes against humanity our world has ever witnessed. That should not be forgotten because of a bullshit apology made only to save political face.

Spoke like a true aclu supporter! If half of you idiots put your attention where real torture methods are being carried out it would be obvious to the world that we are not the bad guys. The real truth is that the aclu is one shitty ass biased orginization but it's a truth a moron like yourself could never see!

Yeah. Unfortunately, the Administration supports many of the regimes where real torture takes place. You know...Pakistan, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia...All US "allies" in the war on terror.

And mercy...the name calling.

Hey, If Dubbyuh's really all that concerned about the citizens of those countries he should be sure to let their leaders know that they're on the short list. Of course, our troops will be tied down in Iraq for years to come, so it's not really an issue now...Is it?

WASHINGTON - Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.

"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."

His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.

"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.

The apology came a week after Durbin, the Senate minority whip, quoted from an
FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in a U.S.-controlled portion of Cuba as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings," the senator said June 14.

The comment created a buzz on the Internet and among conservative talk radio hosts, but Durbin initially refused to apologize.

"This administration should apologize to the American people for abandoning the Geneva Conventions and authorizing torture techniques that put our troops at risk and make Americans less secure," he said the day after his initial comments.

By last Friday, Durbin was trying to clarify his comments, yet the White House and top Republicans including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist refused to relent. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, in an interview scheduled for broadcast Wednesday on Fox News radio's "The Tony Snow Show," tried to equate the comment with actress Jane Fonda calling U.S. soldiers war criminals during a visit to North Vietnam in 1972.

On Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley — a fellow Democrat — added his voice to the chorus of criticism, saying, "I think it's a disgrace to say that any man or woman in the military would act like that."

Durbin said in his apology: "I made reference to Nazis, to Soviets, and other repressive regimes. Mr. President, I've come to understand that's a very poor choice of words." :lame2: :bsflag:

I would like an explaination of how he came to that understanding. The Senate Minority Whip and he did not know those words were a poor choice? No wonder the Democratic Party is in the minority.
