Virginia GOP to require loyalty oath from primary voters

Many years ago the Democratic Party of Oregon had such a requirement. It lasted only a cycle or two. It previewed Rush's stealth campaign of 2008 trying to get dishonest conservatives to sway Dem politics.

my gawd bert, this is from Raw story..

Or look at the Washington Post link:

Virginia Republicans to require loyalty oath for primary voters - Virginia Politics - The Washington Post

The pledge has no legal weight — voters are free to sign the form and then disregard it if they choose — but it is meant to discourage mischief-making by non-Republicans. Virginians do not register to vote by party, making it possible for Democrats and independents to show up and vote in the Republican contest.

Not everyone in the GOP is on board with the idea. Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William) said in a press release Thursday that he was opposed to the pledge.

“Virginia’s Republican leadership wants to mandate a loyalty oath when Virginia’s Republican officials are in court fighting the Obamacare mandate?” Marshall said. “This sends the wrong message.”

-Registered democrats can vote in Republican primaries in Virginia?----:badgrin:

How screwed up is that--- This state deserves the "butterfly ballot award"--they just took it away from Broward county, Florida.

The state Republican Party will require voters to sign a loyalty oath in order to participate in the March 6 presidential primary.

Anyone who wants to vote must sign a form at the polling place pledging to support the eventual Republican nominee for president. Anyone who refuses to sign will be barred from voting in the primary.

How is that legal?

EDIT: the way it is worded, they cannot 'force' someone to vote for the GOP nominee in the general election. They use the word 'intend'. Loophole.

There's no such requirement here in the Commonwealth.

Apparently there is now. And it has to do with the State GOP screwing up their primary. Basically stating since they have only 2 candidates on their ballot--should someone else win the nomination--then their primary voters PLEDGE to vote for the GOP nominee.

Same thing as Rush trying to subvert the democratic process with his urging of dishonest crossover voting in the 2008 primaries and conventions.

It's an attempt to prevent Dem shenanigans in VA's open primary. Of course, it won't work. People who are willing to lie and claim they're Republicans are willing to break an oath.
The same as Rush's conservatives who were unable to pervert their opponents' conventions and primaries in 2008. Glad to see you thinking straight on this, even though as a reactionary you don't think straight normally.

...which is what the VA GOP's oath is trying to prevent.

Hush, boy. I don't support open primaries for that very reason.

No surprise, however, that you do not support the VA GOP's intent. It'll make it easier for you leftists to write in Mickey Mouse.

It looks like some kind of effort to stop democrats from sabotaging the republican primary.

It’s some kind of idiotic effort.

Just as idiotic as the notion democrats might try to ‘sabotage’ a GOP primary.

It's an attempt to prevent Dem shenanigans in VA's open primary.

Ignorant, partisan, paranoid – nonsense.

A Loyalty Oath? Wow...

Really, the GOP has moved from bizarre to creepy, at least in Virginia; so much for ‘death to tyrants.’

And to whom or what exactly are republicans swearing an oath?

Fox News?

I think this kind of think is pointless. Most people who participate in Primaries are die hard partisans. And if they are such, they're already going to toe the line for whomever the nominee is anyway, or just not vote at all. Anyone who isn't a die hard partisan but decides they want to vote in the Primary anyway will simply say "Sure, whatever you say" and vote however they want in the General.

So all in all, it's mostly silly. Though I think it's also a bit pathetic. It just goes to show what's most important to these people. Party over all else.

It might keep a few Democrats from voting.

, Rush isn't the only who has ever suggested this..

I read just the other day where the Democrats are calling for their voters to do the same thing Rush suggested. can't remember where I read it, I'll try and find it.

Ah, yes, the GOP is trying to prevent people from pulling the same nonsense they tried to pull last election.
