Violent video games are focus of California petition to Supreme Court - Los Angeles Times

Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown has petitioned the high court to uphold a state law banning the sale or rental of violent games to anyone younger than 18.

California is taking one last stab at regulating violent video games.

Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown on Wednesday petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a state law banning the sale of such games to children. The law was overturned by a federal district court on 1st Amendment grounds in 2007. An appeals court in February denied California's attempt to overturn that decision.

"In the same way pornography can be banned, pornographic violence can be banned as well," Brown, who is widely expected to run for governor next year, asserted in an interview with The Times.

...

Well, hell, this just solidifies my will to vote Republican in 2010 and throw another monkey wrench into the capitalist economy. :eusa_angel:

Oh, and before another lame thread is started, yes, I can legally vote in 2010. :eusa_whistle:

You really think the Republican leaders are any better on this subject? They all want to censor something, Rep or Dem.

They are on the verge of going bankrupt and this is what they come up with to deal with? Sheesh, what's wrong with these people?

They need to define violence.

Almost every game has some form of it.

Even Mario...Who knows what some kid might do if they saw Mario jumping on the heads of mushrooms?! :cuckoo:
Wasn't thinking of that, but it does also.

The only kind I have heard parents object to is the bloody stuff you see in some games.

The thing is, they don't even know what violence is, and that's sad as well as stupid. Unless heads are getting ripped off and blood splatters everywhere they think it's "not violent" ... hell, GTA almost got a "G" rating because the first one didn't have much animated "violence", just a lot of guns and punching/kicking/etc.. Almost all games have violence in them. But :eusa_shhh: don't tell them that.

Yes by all means let's blame tools for what people do with them. If we quit making excuses for people to do the inexcusable maybe we'd have fewer people doing the inexcusable.

Jerry will get my vote, even though I don't like him. He's better than that Newsome guy from San Fran.

I completely and totally agree with him on this. These games should have been banned for minors years ago.

Its not "censorship" to cleanse filthy or immoral ENTERTAINMENT. Lets get that straight. Censorship is banning or persecuting someone for an OPINION or POINT OF VIEW. Music, tv, video games, have nothing to do with it. Political Correctness is censorship, cleansing entertainment is not (and that's not even what's being talked about here, its only about keep these games away from underage children).

censor
–noun
1. an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.

–verb (used with object)
6. to examine and act upon as a censor.
7. to delete (a word or passage of text) in one's capacity as a censor.

There's the definition of censor taken from dictionary.com and censorship is just "the act or practice of censoring".

And this law isn't needed, no such laws exist regarding violent movies or novels, and the government has no place determining what entertainment is appropriate for children.

Also all major game stores have a policy not to sell to kids, it's unlikely a kid will get the cash needed to pay for these fancy new games, and there hasn't been sufficient proof that violent games are harmful to minors.

Would you care to explain why?

They can't, and they don't realize how much censorship they are pushing on people, both sides. One says less government, the other more freedoms, but both want to enforce what words can used, what violence is, etc.. It's all bullshit.
