Obama was not talking about a "security force" with guns or police powers.

He was talking specifically about expanding AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps and the USA Freedom Corps, which is the volunteer initiative launched by the Bush administration after the attacks of 9/11, and about increasing the number of trained Foreign Service officers who populate U.S. embassies overseas.

Of course not, he would be crazy to talk about it like that. Just like the healthcare bill, the NCDC would be a framework for future endeavors.

My point is for a long time the government has looked for ways to do things that only cops and soldiers can do....but get around the Constitution. Like searching homes illegally. 4th Amendment prohibits unlawful searches of homes, but the fed and state governments have looked at ways around it. Sad as it sounds, they tossed around the idea of having firefighters enter homes for safety checks, then report to the police what they see. It would be a search of a home, but firemen aren't bound by the 4th amendment, thus it would technically be legal. They were going to use the Patriot Act as a vessel to initiate safety checks, then have firemen do it and see who may be stockpiling guns, ammo, food, etc. Fortunately, that idea was crushed because no fire chief in America would go along with it.

But read through history, and there are cases of big governments using civilian service groups for things like that, and some of those groups eventually became armed. Was Obama plannning that? Doubtful, but who knows. All evil begins with a seemingly innocent action.

And in summary, I'll say this. Cops and soldiers know 1,000X more about what it takes to protect, preserve and win freedom. They deal with the dirtiest and ugliest side of humanity every day while we rest peacefully in our ignorant bliss of cable TV. They understand what is truly a threat to society, and what is really just a bunch of BS some politician is saying to win an election. They understand what laws could be a threat to freedom, and which ones are on the books just for the sake of being there.

Cops and soldiers are like the canary in the cole mine for our freedom. When cops and soldiers start getting worried.....thats when we should also. When they start feeling the need to promise the American public that they will reaffirm their oath and never do anything un-Constitutional, well, there is a reason to worry. Cops and soldiers are good at a lot of things, but one of the best things they have learned to do is ignore bulls**t. They deal with it every day, from their bosses sometimes and from the public. If cops and soldiers are standing up, pointing and saying "Danger", then we better damn well pay attention.
