Venezuela Raises Minimum Wage 3,000% and Lots of Workers Get Fired

This from the Houston Chronicle back in 2014:

One would think that conservatives would favor a minimum wage high enough to get people off government welfare programs. But this is not the case. Their distaste for “handouts” and imposing perceived burdens on employers far outweighs their desire to shrink the size of government and in turn the federal budget deficit. Conservatives’ concern about a higher minimum wage is more about their concern for losing campaign contributions from very wealthy donors who stand to lose if the wage is increased, not about their concern for minimum wage workers losing their jobs.

I was surprised that it had not been raised in about ten years. The idea of raising the FMW to $15 per hour is crazy in my opinion. But $10 seems about right if done in stages over the next decade or so.

Because they would just have to raise the welfare level, jesus Christ they are still poor as hell making minimum wage no mater what the national MW is .

The generalities of your argument (not to mention the fallacies as indicated through historical lesson) are profound.

Say what? Minimum wage used to be 25 cents an hour, I have no clue when we started to give welfare to workers but I know damn well they had to raise it with the increase of the MW over the years.

Hell I read like over 50% of California workers are eligible..

The economy has shifted from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. With it, labor compensation has remained stagnant. When the FMW was introduced in the 1930’s we had poverty. Today, we still have poverty. If they made it $15 or $150 or $1500 an hour, we’d still have poverty. So it’s a strawman to link the two.

What is important is as labor has been better compensated through the FMW; the business owners have been able to centralize massive amounts of wealth and the middle class has expanded.

It is a balancing act.

2015 Poverty Guidelines

There are two slightly different versions of the federal poverty measure:

The Poverty thresholds since 1973 (and for selected earlier years) and weighted average poverty thresholds since 1959 are available on the Census Bureau’s Web site. For an example of how the Census Bureau applies the thresholds to a family’s income to determine its poverty status, see “How the Census Bureau Measures Poverty” on the Census Bureau’s web site.

The Federal Register notice of the 2015 poverty guidelines is available.

The poverty guidelines are sometimes loosely referred to as the “federal poverty level” (FPL), but that phrase is ambiguous and should be avoided, especially in situations (e.g., legislative or administrative) where precision is important.

Key differences between poverty thresholds and poverty guidelines are outlined in a table under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). See also the discussion of this topic on the Institute for Research on Poverty’s web site.

The following figures are the 2015 HHS poverty guidelines which are scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on January 22, 2015. (Additional information will be posted after the guidelines are published.)

The joys of Socialism....paying attention demoquacks?
I really feel for the people of Venezuela , but their plight shows the folly of Ultraliberalism and what this nation faces if we turn toward the left.

I remember the coup of 2002, and all the love American Liberals gave to Chavez to restore his tyranny. Leading libs like Sean Penn went to Caracas to honor the Liberal Leader.

From there, the Liberal Despots of Venezuela have led the country down the garden path.

And even though Venezuela is fantastically wealthy sitting on untold petro-wealth, they will soon fall.
The people who voted in these thugs don't deserve any sympathy. They're getting exactly what they deserve.

With some regret I feel the same way. But with an explanation. I work with Venezuelans every day. Like all socialist run parties or countries they have a wealthy ruling elite who use impoverished voters to stay in power. Communism and socialism are products of democracy nine times out of ten. The poor kept voting socialist for years even as their poverty deepened because they were told the rich were being punished. But today most Venezuelans, would like to rid themselves of socialists. But its Too late. You can vote a socialist in to power but never out.
They now have to deal with “Colectivos”...organized thugs who claim to be fighting fascism. They beat or murder opposition candidates and any citizens who arent sufficiently thankful for the pleasures of socialism.

Never listen to liberals. Their "solutions" are half baked and riddled with assumptions that turn out to be wrong. Their repeated failures cost time, money, and resources, not to mention the lasting damage their dumb ass ideas cause.

The middle to upper middle class Venezuelans I deal with are terrified of them (the Colectivos). They loot and burn the property of opponents who work in the US. That is the stick. The carrot is the super wealthy allow what used to be the middle class to keep their savings in US dollars as do the ruling elites. Worthless Bolivors for everyone else.
So the thugs on top now control the lower classes through antifa like groups and the educated class are controlled by economic access.
They did it to themselves originally. But they have no choice now.

Like no one saw this coming, so where are the genius liberal economics majors about this? Let's do that here!!!!!!

Venezuelan workers who earned a pittance are now earning a slightly larger pittance, thanks to a big increase in the minimum wage. What they may not have are jobs.

Starting this week, 7 million employees are guaranteed 1,800 bolivars a month -- worth about $20 at the black-market rate. President Nicolas Maduro intended the mandate as political boost, but it’s having the opposite effect as companies, already hit by Venezuela’s epic economic contraction, tell workers they can’t afford to keep them.

While there have been many similar moves in the past, never has one been so disruptive, arriving amid hyperinflation, depression and devaluation. Some employers are restructuring costs, rejiggering pay scales and negotiating settlements with workers. Others are simply dismissing people. Much of the action happens secretively as companies try to avoid punishment by the government, which has been jailing those it believes are flouting the rules.

I'll gladly take 1800 Bolivars! They are like one of the very best Cuban cigars ever made! o_O

The fools who voted these thugs into power are getting exactly what they deserve. It's too bad for the decent people in Venezuela who voted otherwise.

If we allow the leftist ruling elites a break here we will suffer the same fate.
Slaughtering the Democrats through voting was a welcome victory but not nearly a sufficient victory. We have to give them no breathing space at all. We should not feel obligated to consult with them or take their views into account.
It is that obligation of decency that they exploit with indecency.

I agree that leftwingers should be pursued with no mercy, but that isn't going to happen because Americans are so naive.

Unless we end government subsidized universities and government run K-12 schools, the left will always have the upper hand.

Everyone being fired over the min wage hike is what the Left call “bad luck”.

Uh...we should ask you where the liberal economics majors are that are saying we should increase minimum wage 3000%...
