Obama Economic Adviser Says U.S. Should Consider 'Value-Added Tax'

The Christian Science Monitor / August 13, 2004

WASHINGTON
George W. Bush is known for liking bold, sometimes even risky, initiatives - ideas like sending a man to Mars, or revamping the US immigration system, or overthrowing the dictator of Iraq.

But is the president really ready to take on the American tax system? A comment Tuesday at a town-hall meeting in Florida has reignited the long-simmering debate in conservative circles over whether Washington should rethink the way it levies taxes.

When a supporter asked President Bush about scrapping the current tax code and replacing it with a national sales tax, he replied favorably: "I'm not exactly sure how big the national sales tax is going to have to be, but it's the kind of interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously."

I'm not sure what the Obama administration has in mind, but this is nothing new. And like most things Obama, if the GOP was once for it, all Obama has to do is to think about it and the GOP is automatically against it.

Stop playing stupid. The "fair tax" is designed to REPLACE income tax - the VAT is in addition to income tax. Is that too "nuanced" for you?

Stupid?? The OP article said the advisor said we should consider a european style VAT. Do you have any idea what that encompasses? The EU has a VAT instead of a personal income tax. Did you know that? If you look at individual nations like France, you'd see a VAT and a personal income tax. Do you know which the administration is thinking about? If not, wouldn't it be prudent to 'keep your powder dry' until you do? Especially, since the party telling you what to think has spoken very fondly of this in the recent past.

It is just a trail balloon, the Democratic inevitable. Well.. now let's see.. Democrats love wasting other peoples money, redistribution of wealth, grabbing more power over the people and squishing business and personal incentives.. Damn .. face it we're screwed...

Acknowledging it would be a highly unpopular move, White House economic adviser Paul Volcker said yesterday the United States should consider imposing a "value added tax" similar to those charged in Europe to help get the deficit under control.

A VAT is a national sales tax that, like state and city sales taxes, would be collected by retailers.

Volcker, at the New-York Historical Society, told a panel on the global financial crisis that Congress might also have to consider new taxes on carbon and energy.

The VAT suggestion was immediately met with outrage by Republicans.

"It shouldn't surprise anyone that the Obama White House would advocate a European-style tax to help finance their European-style government health-care plan," said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.

:dig:......Democrats in power...........OH... Shit

but..but.. The right has been yelling for a value added tax for years.
Now that you get one you just bitch about it???

Some will complain if you hung them with new rope. sheesh...

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

You wished for complete republican control. How did that work out?

Fine, you give us a Constitutional amendment repealing the Income Tax and we'll give you a VAT. How about that for compromise?? You just can't get more fair.

Really? I thought they meant the people who were gonna stick balls in their liberal mouths.

When I say Liberal, I never have such a thought.

Maybe they should get new terminology. It appears to be misleading on its face.

Could happen...

Might happen......

It's possible...........

But, then again................maybe not

I remember when they said that they wouldn't take over General Motors.

I also remember when the idea of a Carbon Tax was scoffed at. Now it's part of Cap & Trade.

They have a VAT in Europe....since the Dems want to pattern themselves after Socialist countries in Europe a VAT is a must.

Your so right. We will have to wait and see what Barry and his pack of clowns will do.

If this VAT is on top of all the other taxes we pay, then we taxpayers will be in deep shit.

I'm going to wait and see about this though.

Remember, its an election year. I don't believe they will do anything until after the elections in NOV.

Passing a VAT tax = obama being a bold faced liar like george bush SR

For the poor boobies who are naive enough to think that Obama will replace the income tax with the VAT:

50% of Americans now pay no income tax.

The 50% who do are vilified for being The Rich.

The VAT will be used by Obama to extract taxes out of the 50% who currently do not pay income tax (in addition to bleeding more out of those who do pay income taxes). He will wave around additional income tax increases to show how he is sticking it to The Rich (while he slips a shiv into The Middle Class and Poor VAT targets).

Increasing the size of the federal government from 20% to 30% of GDP is Expensive. There just aren't enough rich people to foot the entire increase - so VAT will be additive.

I certainly don't see him replacing it. He will just add VAT to everything else you already pay.. and I mean everything.

Of course he will.

And it will be an increase on those who make less than $250,000...errrr $200,000...errr $150,000 per year. We were warned via the downward progression of definitions for The Rich during the campaign.

At the end of the day, if you earn or own anything, this government wants to take if from you.
