USDA Fights 'Mountain Pride'

So...American poor just aren't poor enough?

No. They aren't poor enough. Poverty should be a motivator to not be poor anymore. The more comfortable poverty is, the less motivation people have to get out of poverty.

That's why when immigrants come here from really poor countries, they work so hard. They don't want to experience that kind of poverty. When they find out how comfortable poverty in the US can be, they are happy to be poor.
And of course it's inconsequential if the opportunities to escape poverty are not there? If you're poor in a rural area, you're screwed. That's the way life is in reality. Not some bumper sticker you picked up at a CPAC convention or something Limbaugh dropped in your ear.

If you're laid off in a Rust Belt town, the rest of the jobs left for China after the venture capitalists got theirs. That means not only the car plant (which Romney thinks should have folded like a Chinese road map), but the hardware store, the barber shop, the diner, the hobby shop and everything else suffers. No jobs gets amplified exponentially.

It's easy to sneer at the poor, particularly if you don't know them. With morals like these, why should I even consider Conservatism as a political philosophy?

Because you and your ilk want the easy way out, you want the government to take care of them. You want the government to ensure people in "poverty" in the US can buy cigarettes and crack cocaine. You want them to have government issued cell phones so they can keep in touch with their suppliers. I've seen a lot more malnourished, obese and undisciplined children of parents on food stamps than those I know who want to be self sustaining, without government interference.

The Food Stamp program was supposed to be temporary help, not a life style. It makes you feel better that the government is "taking care of them" so you don't have to bother!!

Three to be exact, and we're filling 24 back packs for kids before school starts. How many did you visit??

Then you move... Airbus is hiring in Mobile. Michigan UE rate is 8.2, Illinois is 8.8 and Alabama is 7.3

Out of rep. Excellent post!

Agreed. And taken care of ;) :eusa_shhh:

Actually the poor LEAVE. It's why Flint Michigan, in the rust belt isn't the city that it was and why so many rural towns are losing population to the cities.

I know the poor quite well. I grew up poor when people weren't paid to be poor. Last year, I became poor voluntarily and moved to rural Nevada to be poor among other poor. I left, not because poverty was painful, but because poverty was too luxurious and I got bored out of my mind. My neighbors, who were all as poor as I was, alleviated the unending and crushing boredom with beer, pot and getting into fights.

I love the progressive take...if they aren't getting foodstamps, take their kids and apply corporal punishment!

Nice goose step there.

Ignorant hill folk do not have a patriotic right to raise malnourished functionally retarded kids, if Gomer and Sally May want to starve themselves, more power to them, but if their offspring are showing up at school hungry in the morning then they learn nothing and their brains turn to mush, more republicans that way I reckon.

....and you don't understand why Gomer and Sally Mae hate your guts... Such compassion, such caring --- I haven't seen such progressive concern for citizens since Idi Amin..

When I needed a job, I applied state wide...and in fact, world wide.

Then I moved.

Obviously a proud graduate of the DNC voter outreach seminar!

What is it like to be poor in today's America? A report.

When my husband died, I closed my business and went off to live on $1,400 a month. I moved to rural Nevada because Harry Reid would take care of me.

I moved into subsidized housing where my 1,000 sq ft apartment had two bedrooms, two baths and all appliances including washer and dryer were included, everything including the building was brand new. It was my biggest expense at $400.00 a month. Twice a month, I went to the local pantry for my government provided groceries. I thought I would get basics. Nope. I got arrgula salad, portobello mushrooms, meat, eggs, several different kinds of cereal, fruit, eggs, coffee, tea, everything but milk. Being poor, I was entitled to reduced utility rates so I could keep the AC on 24/7. I got lifeline phone service for $5.00 a month and free internet. Because I had my "poor card", the local Casino gave me a $10.00 gambling voucher every month, 99 cent meals and a vouncher that cost $5.00 but would get me into the shows every time they changed performers.

Every quarter the social worker would show up at the complex (we had 800 units) to see if there was anything else we needed. I got my government cell phone. I mentioned that the only thing I still had to buy was sundries, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc. She was SOOOO SORRY that she had been derelict in her duty. Stores had already made those donations. I got a box of supplies, some of which had been donated by Estee Lauder, Lancome, Elizabeth Arden and other high end manufacturers. I even got makeup by MAC. I got an EBT card that I used to get my hair and nails done, and buy pet food. The social worker directed me to the local Closet where the clothing store donations went. Naturally all my medical care was covered.

I was able to buy a new big screen television!

Most of my neighbors were poor families with children. Neither mother nor father worked. They hung out at the complex pool smoking dope. Yes, we were all poor, meaning we had a pool, playground and fully equipped computer center where those too poor to afford their own, got computer time. Not only did these families not work, they didn't need to work. What ever money they got, they didn't need to spend on their own maintenace which left plenty to buy drugs and alcohol. It's a wonder the police didn't set up a substation at that complex since they were always there breaking up fights and arresting the severely potted wandering about in 120 degree heat screaming at their personal demons.

I grew up very poor, back in the days when it was truly agonizing to be poor. That's why I determined not to be poor myself. After having experienced being poor today, compared to being poor when I was growing up, had my parents enjoyed THIS kind of poverty, my Dad would never, ever, have gone to work even one day.

I had to leave. I couldn't deal with that kind of crushing boredom. I amused myself with whatever purpose I could gather up which was to groom the dogs in the complex free, but it really wasn't enough so I came back to California and real work.

When you see the poor with $100.00 Nikes, bling and dope, it's because they have nothing to spend their government money on. The average poor person has more disposable income than the average middle class worker.

Meh, I'd rather just keep my job. I don't like depending on others to take care of me.

I work full time, I'm still within smelling distance of the poverty level...and I see people all week long who have a lot more disposable income than I do, thanks to subsidized housing and energy programs.

I can't resent them for taking advantage of programs that exist to make their lives better...but sheesh it burns when I pay my rent and power and water, and have nothing left to repair my kids' bicycles or put new tires on my car.

On the other hand, I'm grateful that I don't have to live in an apartment. I've done that before...I lived in subsidized housing for 2 years after splitting with the kids' dad and it was very nice (beautiful setting) but I am not a fan of apartment living.

Then you move... Airbus is hiring in Mobile. Michigan UE rate is 8.2, Illinois is 8.8 and Alabama is 7.3
And who's in line to buy my house? And the house next door, and the houses down the street? Seems so simple until you try the reality of it! If everyone pulled up stakes, what happens to their largest investment~ their home? No market? Where are the buyers?

A vibrant middle class is what grows the economy. Waiting for largess to "trickle down" is failing proposition! Those with capital are not letting it flow at all, let alone "trickle". The economy is grown from the middle up, not the top down.

I suppose, but I definently liked not getting a bill.

How confusing. It sounds as if you are angry that the haves aren't paying your way?
