USDA Fights 'Mountain Pride'

They don't want food stamps...

USDA Combats

1. If mom and dad choose to not use food stamps then their children suffer and that's child abuse.
2. When these people get sick due to unhealthy eating, they go to the E.R. and that sends all our health care costs up.

And ... The article specifically says the food stamps can be used for seeds to grow your own food. You guys are against seeds now? Really?

You pricks have no concept of human nature.

refusing to take food stamps doesn't automatically mean you're malnourishing your kids.

perhaps not but it is a good indicator, if you actually qualify for food stamps with kids in the house it's a good bet that they are not getting three squares a day. No one is actually starving like ethiopia but bad nutrition stunts learning, raising a generation of ignorant kids benefits only the republicans.
clue: Just because gubmint does something doesn't mean that people won't do it for themselves.

Get one.

blasphemer!

If people are not feeding their kids well out of foolish pride they need their asses kicked all the way to the food stamp office, otherwise I really don't care if anyone is starving themselves out of hillbilly pride.

Why don't you leave them alone and start with the crackwhores who send their screwed up kids to public schools where they don't get the help they need.

You guys have no clue.

I can still remeber that Okie pioneer pride growing up in the sixties. In rural Oklahoma my family was well off, but I saw some people that had been sick or crippled not able to feed or clothe their family. I saw children running in underwear because that is all they had to wear, cause i would go with my Papa and visit this family and give them my old clothes.
I saw kids eating wish sanwiches, when they were available. living in shot-gun shacks with no heat or air and electricity that had been installed in the 1930's. Well water still hand pumped.
I usually played with the kids as my Papa took his gifts of love to these people, their father was bed riiden and could not maintain his farm anymore. No one seemed to help this familly by us.

Oh, that evil pride... Things are much better now that we have an entire political party with a singular focus on providing handouts.

When i was 13 my mother got divorced and got a job. She came down with back problems and was unable to work. I mowed lawns for money and worked as a car hop at A&W drive-in, at a dollar an hour.
We ate eggs and peanut butter all summer.
there was no food stamps.
kids did go hungry because of the change in society during the '60's and '70's. But we didn't die. We had the memory of the Great depression Era to tell us how tough things really were.
Now many during those really bad times did get govt. food. My MIL that is from the Dakotas said they got rabbits and oysters.
believe it or not the poor folks in the NE and MW got lobster.
My grandma 1923-2011 told us they ate whatever they could that was handed out by the govt.
My grandmother 1919-2009 woud never talk about it as would my Papa 1896-1991.

depends on ones outlook on life. I have all I need. i do not mind another having what they need.

I know several people that grow their own food, from seeds they've saved from prior years. They also have chickens and their eggs to eat, goats for milk, cheese and meat, too. You don't need government assistance to eat well. They have bees making honey, too. :)

yes, in hard times it seems the rural farmers have it easier than the big city unemployed. I have 43 acres, soI can grow all the food I want and then some. But I know kow more people without land than with.
But on the flipside is, when I have extra and i try to give it away people shy away when I tell them they must harvest it.

My chickens produce more than we can use, but not enough to try and sell. Often when we try to give them away, the recipients only want them if they are delivered. Same with excess from my garden.

Consider a Food Bank or Pantry. ;)

Oh what is it now Willow? Do you want people to be able to abuse their kids? Or get free health care? Or not get seeds?

Fuck, man up already. Stop being such a cowardly bitch.

How many people on food stamps have IPhones, 60" flat screens and $100 sneakers?
Some people have their priorities straight,

Don't Be Stupid!

Who says they aren't feeding them well? Just because somebody qualifies for foodstamps and doesn't get them doesn't necessarily mean they aren't feeding their kids well. The categorical eligibility limit for foodstamps is 185 percent of the federal poverty limit, or almost twice the federal poverty limit. And families who are at the poverty limit can still feed themselves.

America's definition of "eating well" and the rest of the world's definition of eating well do not mesh...just as our idea of "hunger" has no real meaning, when compared to countries where people are REALLY hungry. Our definition is skipping a meal once a week, or not having a certain number of days' food stored in the cupboard. It isn't real hunger.
So...American poor just aren't poor enough?

The vast majority aren't poor at all. If your kid has an IPhone and a TV in his room, but not enough to eat, YOU are the problem, not the "greedy" Republicans.

I started working at 6 picking pecans for money at .05 cents a pound.

I have a pecan tree. i don't pick em. When my husband isn't looking I ease up to the tree with the car and "bump" it a few times. Then I just gather them up for Christmas. We have bumper crops of pecans and tangerines at chiristmas.. we have a lemon tree, and a grapefruit tree too. People should really think about growing more stuff. In the summertime my redneck husband sits on the front porch and gives away fresh tomatoes and peas and beans. He's an excellent fisherman too.

No. They aren't poor enough. Poverty should be a motivator to not be poor anymore. The more comfortable poverty is, the less motivation people have to get out of poverty.

That's why when immigrants come here from really poor countries, they work so hard. They don't want to experience that kind of poverty. When they find out how comfortable poverty in the US can be, they are happy to be poor.

I can offer you some cheese to go with your whine.

They won't accept it for the same reasons it's illegal to feed the homeless.

The government has a right to make sure that children are malnourished, not merely hungry, but not receiving the approved amount of government standard nutrition.

The government has a right to make sure that children are not obese and receiving more food than they are entitled to receive.

The government has a right to make sure that children get the approved amount of exercise.

The government has a right to make sure that children get whatever medical care the government has allotted to them.

The government has a right to chattel slavery.

I am at a loss to determine how you came to that bizarre conclusion that is completely unrelated to anything I said.

And of course it's inconsequential if the opportunities to escape poverty are not there? If you're poor in a rural area, you're screwed. That's the way life is in reality. Not some bumper sticker you picked up at a CPAC convention or something Limbaugh dropped in your ear.

If you're laid off in a Rust Belt town, the rest of the jobs left for China after the venture capitalists got theirs. That means not only the car plant (which Romney thinks should have folded like a Chinese road map), but the hardware store, the barber shop, the diner, the hobby shop and everything else suffers. No jobs gets amplified exponentially.

It's easy to sneer at the poor, particularly if you don't know them. With morals like these, why should I even consider Conservatism as a political philosophy?
