Another Flash point?

The US Navy is ramping up its presence in the Black Sea as part of a bid to counter Russia's increased presence there, a US military official tells CNN.
It's a region that has become increasingly fraught with tensions as Russia has reinforced its military forces in the area following its seizure of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move rejected by the vast majority of the international community.
On Saturday the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Carney joined the USS Ross in the Black Sea to "conduct maritime security operations," according to a statement from the US Navy's 6th Fleet, which oversees US naval operations in the region. It's the first time two US Navy warships have been in the Black Sea since July 2017.
"Our decision to have two ships simultaneously operate in the Black Sea is proactive, not reactive," US Navy Vice Adm. Christopher Grady, the commander of 6th Fleet, said in a release announcing the Carney's arrival.

"We operate at the tempo and timing of our choosing in this strategically important region," Grady said, adding that "the continued presence of the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea demonstrates our enduring commitment to regional stability, maritime security of our Black Sea partners, and the collective defense of our NATO allies"
On Sunday Russia announced its own naval deployments to the area, with the Russian Ministry of Defense issuing a statement saying that a Russian frigate, the Admiral Essen, and two patrol ships had entered the Black Sea for a series of exercises.

That cannot possibly be true if Trump is Putin's puppet. This story must be fake.

Why is the US Navy in the Black sea in the first place? .... :dunno:

Heck, if the Russians had a naval task force holding military maneuvers in the Gulf of Mexico, our government and the America people would be throwing a hissy fit and want to declare war. ....

They come within miles of our seaboards all the time.

The Black Sea is a large body of water that is almost totally land locked and surrounded by several countries. Why are we spending taxpayer money to have our Navy protect that isolated body of water?
We should withdraw our ships, and let the countries that border the Black sea use their navy to stand guard. .....

The bigger message was Trump blocking the unanimously passed sanctions against Russia.
I agree..and he still refuses to enact the will of the people as expressed in the Sanctions bill that was passed by Congress and signed by him. That tells where his real loyalties lay.

The Black Sea is not a Russian lake. The same martime laws that allow Russiian warships to pass through the Dardenelles into the Med allow ours to sail the Black Sea.

I get that, but why are we on the other side of the world, spending vast amounts of taxpayer money to sail our Navy around in a what is basically a large saltwater lake? ......

The Black Sea is lined wiih 3 NATO countries and two aspirants and is of strategic imprtance not only for Europe, Russia but Centrall Asia as well. It's a vverry old game.

Two destroyers? Monaco's navy could take out two destroyers.
American destroyers of today are not the destroyer of yore:

Yes thank you captain-look-it-up, we're aware that technology advances through time. What you seem to not be aware of is that Russian technolgy has also advanced. They're about as intimidated as the US would be if two Russian destroyers showed up off the coast of New York. The Pentagon would yawn, fart, and then have more doughnuts.

All we are doing is aggravating Russia with our navy in the Black sea.

And this NATO crap is just a leftover from the Cold war. We need to quit wasting mega billions being a member, and let Europe pay for their own defense. .....

You are obviously clueless in these matters. There is very little in the Russian fleet or any other that can counter the state-of-the-art US destroyers which are the most powerful non-aircraft carrier combat vessels on the seas.

I didn't need to look it up, it was simply a matter of providing a link to counter your vacuuos post. I know about this well.

I beg to differ...2 modern US destroyers could take out Monaco..never mind their non-existent navy. These ships are Aegis equipped.

Hmmm ...what part of pointy end of the spear are you not getting. There's a whole lot of punch represented by those 2 ships. Force projection. It's a thing. I might also point out that we would have the benefit of interior lines of supply. It is interesting that our political people say one thing..but our pattern of force projection says quite another..to an educated eye.

BTW..we are still 1 generation ahead of Russia, in naval readiness. Do not discount the US navy...we rock.

I give to you the strategy of keeping our military adventures far from our domestic borders. That's the real reason we belong to NATO.
