US Safer with Saddam in Prison

I don't realize it. Saddam was too much addicted to maintaining power to have ever attacked the United States.

He may have been an arrogant, maniacal, mass murderer, but he was no fool. He knew any military action against the US would have been the end for him.

Besides, his country's infrastructure and military capacity had been made so weak he couldn't have invaded a McDonald's in Tel Aviv.

After a decade of war with Iran, a swift butt kicking from the US after invading Kuwait and ten years of sanctions and weapons inspectors he had nothing left but his dangerous pride.

I don't understand how any American could have been duped into believing he was actually a danger to citizens here.

Hmmm, perhaps allowing weapons to fall into the hands of terrorists for one! you are the one being duped here!

Anytime a rouge leader such as Saddam has an option to hurt people he has hatred for something should be done. Of course you don't understand this as there may not of been a long range missle that can reach us, but Anthrax and VX are harmless right?

As I said in my original post. Hussein is too self-centered to have ever attacked America because the next play would have been bombs over Baghdad and his ouster.

Have you ever been seriously worried that Hussein was going to use chemical weapons here in America?

I thought I heard yesterday that Saddam still thinks Kuwait(sp?) is his. This proves he dillusional and was a danger to the world, not just the U.S. I think we are all safer now and I believe he had ties with terror groups. I don't know about 9-11,but he definitely had ties with terror groups. Anyone who runs a country the way he does is basically a terrorist himself anyway.

Menewa's position that Saddam was too interested in his own survival to risk attacking the US is flatly contradicted by past events:

1. He invaded Iran in Sept 1980 - a country with a huge standing army, having three times the population as his own and ruled by Islamic fascists. Hardly the action of a rational thinker! He could bank oin a response and he got it - within 2 years he was defending Iraqi soil against the Iranian human waves and begging them to stop the war!

2. He invaded Kuwait knowing there would be a US-led backlash. He got it - but we let him back in his rat hole.

Maniacs like Saddam don't work with the same logic and thinking as normal humans - nor even military strategists. In fact, his military prowess and strategic awareness is not even at kindergarten level, as any study of the wars he initiated will show.

The fact is that Saddam was - and still is - driven by this almost Hitleresque vision he has of himself being the pan-Arab saviour - standing on top of the Arab world as a modern-day Nasser. This deluded vision has its roots in the pan-Arab socialism which was the overriding credo of Baath ideology. All his inner core of people are similarly deluded - remember, they had over 30 years of being shielded from the realities of the world outside, cushioned and mollycoddled by oil wealth. They rarely, if ever went abroad, and almost never went outside the Middle East. They spent all their time strutting around the basketcase known as the Arab world, spouting their anti-israeli, anti-West venom. Basically, they were just highly militarised versions of the playground bully.

Most certainly they were dangerous as they answered to none of the checks and balances of a properly functioning democratic society. That is why they were so goddam dangerous and why we had to take them out!

Today's puzzler:

Who was it that said "all that it needs for evil to triumph is for good men to stand idly by?"

I know it wasn't Clinton (!!) - but does anyone know who it was?

I believe it I saw someone say it was Voltaire. I'll check.

Unless a Dem starts a war,it's not legit too a lot of the left. Do you hear them picking on Bill Clinton for dropping bombs on Iraq?....nope!

Thanks Kathianne. However, you should have known better than to suggest it would be a FRENCHMAN!!

Mon dieu!

That didnt keep him from invading Kuwait

Then you dont seem to understand why opressive regime is a danger to freedom loving citizens. Especially ones with WMDs that are unaccounted for and ties to terrorism.

You seem to have forgotten that Saddam was being backed the the most powerful nation in the world at this time, the United States. He was sure he wouldn't lose with this kind of muscle at his back. It also didn't hurt that France and the USSR were big alllies as well. However, he didn't know that the US was playing him for a sucker while secretly arming Iran.

He did not know this. There is evidence of one of Hussein's assistants contacting George H.W. Bush's White House just days before the attack on Kuwait. The assistant was told that no backlash would occur from invading Kuwait. Also, Kuwait was guilty of slant oil drilling into Iraq. Such an offense can get you killed here in Texas, even more so in Mesopotamia.

Menewa, other than an idiot from State, this is conspiracy theory. Have you met Patriot, you might have alot in common.
