US meets Palestinian unity deal with guarded optimism

WASHINGTON, (PIC)-- The Obama administration has met reports that rival Fatah and Hamas have reached a unity deal with guarded optimism.

Tommy Veitor, a spokesman for the National Security Council, stressed that the US still holds that Hamas is a terrorist group.

”Hamas ... is a terrorist organization which targets civilians,” said Veitore.

“As we have said before, the United States supports Palestinian reconciliation on terms which promote the cause of peace,” he said. ”To play a constructive role in achieving peace, any Palestinian government must accept the Quartet principles and renounce violence, abide by past agreements, and recognize Israel's right to exist.”

Well it is about a lot more than just Hamas. From this article it is
a response to the wishes of Palestinian civil society including Palestinian Youth

and it is suggested that it could result in

1. elections both for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank but also for those is Dispora.

This I think is a great idea. I watched a Dubai lecture some time ago and there is loads of intelligent energy from Palestinians in Diaspora due to them having had the opportunity to have got a better education than those in Gaza or the occupied West Bank. They were well ready to tell both Hamas and Fatah to get their finger out.

2. Power share between Gaza and the west bank and Gaza becoming part of the Palestinian Authority

3. This illustrates how Palestine/Israeli are going to be affected by the 'Arab Spring'

The deal underscores the US administration’s fading ability to influence events, and the new realities Israel must deal with. There will be much to watch in the months leading up to the Palestinians’ request for full membership in the UN.

4. Creates a broader Palestinian strategy to combat interference from the US and EU to challenge Israel's military rule and apartheid which refuses Palestinians freedom

5.Unity is essential to relieve the ' humiliation and social and economic suffocation' caused to the Palestinians. The belief being that Israel has no desire for a Palestinian state.
