Oversimplification. Russia may have motivated by their desire to maintain control over Chechen oil, but the Chechens wouldn't have seceded from the USSR in the first place if it weren't for their purely nationalistic desire for self-determination. Islam didn't really factor into the conflict until Khattab and other Arab veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War arrived in 1995. If one boils down ALL the reasons behind 99.99% of all conflicts the common denominator is always economic. Any student of humanity and history knows this regardless of the reasons professed by each and all sides. Take an objective as opposed to subjective look.
