That qualifies the US as a third world nation.

U.S. Income Inequality: Top 1 Percent Take Home 24 Percent Of U.S. Income

The New York Times:

The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

And they have the freedom to succeed, just as they have the freedom to fail.... just as every other citizen does.... a free society should not be about punishing success nor for padding failure...

It's class warfare that breeds the envy and jealousy we see from those who make more $$$... and if they would put as much effort into forming their own success as they do about complaining about the success of others, they might be a little better off

Typical HuffPuff crap.

'All men are CREATED equal". Key word: Created. Why is it inequality for some people to get more than others? Want more, get up off your ass and work harder.

Get a JOB, maybe then you will understand how it works....

So what's your point? Should the State now order the confiscation of Citizens' Income to achieve "Equality?" Sounds pretty scary to me. This is why i keep telling people that the Socialists/Progressives should be taken very seriously. They have some very dangerous plans for this Nation. Always keep in mind that the Nazis were Socialists. I don't care what the dumbed-down Liberal-controlled Public School System taught you. The Nazis were loyal Socialists till the very end. Your Freedom really is at stake.

Remind me again why this is a problem?
The difference is that in 3rd world countries someone is guaranteed that kind of income because his father/brother/son/daughter etc is from the right family.
In American it happens because some people are smarter and work harder than others.

Very interesting article - if anyone is interested - The full article is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/opinion/07kristof.html?_r=1

Kristoff makes a few good points, but we are far from a "banana republic". Show me a "banana republic" where any child, no matter how humble his or her origins, can grow up to be president?? Or where the chance at "upward mobility" is as high as it is here? Also, the 24% that he cites in his op-ed includes capital gains, business income, rents, etc, and excludes government transfers like unemployment and social security - so it is a bit misleading. The dats is from 2007 as well. We had quite a bubble that year!!

The figures comes from this report - http://elsa.berkeley.edu/~saez/saez-UStopincomes-2007.pdf which, in my humble opinion, is well worth the read.

Also worth reading is this article Why we can't ignore growing income inequality. (1) - By Timothy Noah - Slate Magazine from Slate - that is also referred to in the Kristoff Op-Ed piece.

The bottom line is that even if we all agree that this is a problem -none of the experts have any real idea how to reverse the trend because almost no one can agree about what's causing it!!

Not any more.

We don't live in that America any more.

We live in Obama-Bushland. Where our government spends money to make sure that certain corporations don't fail. It's called a bailout.

It led to the destruction of capitalism in 2008 under Booosh. Now Obama and Pelosi are just pissing on its grave by expanding the foolishness to gm and running up the deficit.

I wonder how long its going to take for the American left to figure out that their just as much to blame as Bush.

It's definitely hard to pin down. When I look at the problem I see a couple of issues:

1. A failure on the part of education: Education is one of the best ways to help ensure upward mobility, but I'm not sure if you've seen what's happening with the Elementary through High schools, but its just dreck. We seem to be failing kids in our schools, and as such they "graduate" without the skills to ensure any kind of upward mobility.

2. Lost industrial jobs: You're seeing the kind of jobs that used to ensure a middle class setting just leave for overseas. As those jobs leave, people find themselves working at Walmart or Target. Those jobs are honest work, but they're not the kind of jobs that will get you into the middle class.

and that 1% actually produces no product themselves.
They make their money from the labor of others.
Not judging, just saying.

I think we should round them up and shove them into internment camps and confiscate their assets. It really is for the good of the People and "Equality."...People better start taking the Socialists/Progressives more seriously. They are very dangerous. It's not a joke. Your Freedom & Liberty really are at stake.

Actually, how many folks are making things at all anymore? Part of the problem is we've gone from an industrial based economy to a....what the heck are we doing again?

We're pretty much a pure consumerism based economy, and that's unsustainable.

And the "labor of others" is how those others support their families, moron.

Did you know that the top 2% of earners pay about 50% of the taxes?

Anyone know what % of the population the top 1% employ? Oh I forgot you don't want to think about that.
