US - Australia travel

Its 17 hours from here to rooland.

Not a quick hop.

It's a bugger of a journey and I reckon it's getting worse, not better, because of the airlines. The last few times I've been to North America were actually to fly to Toronto. I went via HK with Cathay Pacific - can't speak highly enough of them, excellent, excellent airline. Last trip I flew from Sydney to Vancouver with Air Canada and on to Toronto. I am sad to say never again. Crap cabin service, crap food and crap booze and they lost my bloody baggage between Vancouver and Pearson (got it back though). The plane, Boeing 777-ER was bloody excellent though, terrific onboard entertainment, let down by the lazy and grumpy cabin staff and I am not a demanding passenger.

QANTAS is running the A380 on the Sydney-LA hop but I have no idea what it's like, my brother flew to London on an A380 (try that trip, it's about 20 hours or so) Singapore Airlines and said the seats were worse than the bleachers at a stadium. Skinny arsed bastard

Still when you get here and if you're wise enough to fly away from the coastal cities and to the Red Centre you'll forget about that arduous plane trip.

I was reading an item in the online version of The Age (a Melbourne newspaper, pretty good one too) and I found an interesting article.

I've had to put it here BECAUSE GUNNY HASN'T GOT A BLOODY OCEANIA FORUM!

Ahem, sorry about that :D

UNITED AIRLINES is vowing to take the fight to Qantas and Virgin Blue's long-haul offshoot, V Australia, on the highly contested Australia-US route.

United's chief executive and chairman, Glenn Tilton, has promised to maintain services on the route for the long term despite it turning from one of the most profitable routes in the world to a loss-maker within the last year.

The third-largest US airline recently beefed up its services between the US west coast and Australia by flying newly configured 747 aircraft which feature lie-flat beds in premium-class cabins. Qantas also operates its flagship aircraft, the double-decker A380, on the route.

''It's a hugely significant market for us and we are in that market for the long haul,'' Mr Tilton said in New York as Continental Airlines officially joined the Star Alliance.

Anyway if the airfare war provides Norte Americanos with cheaper fares to get to Australia let me make a suggestion.

Get out of Sydney.

Not slagging Sydney, it's a wonderful city and if you're lucky enough to be flying in on an early morning flight and the pilots can take you over the Harbour so you can see the Bridge (it has to be capitalised) and the Opera House and so on then trust me you're in for a treat because it's a spectacular view. I admit I choke up a bit when I'm coming home and I see it like that.

But there is far more to Australia than Sydney, as good as it is. Problem is that this is a large country with a relatively small population and most of us live on the coast in cities and towns and much of the inland is sparsely populated but that'sd where there are some magical experiences waiting for you.

If you can get some sort of deal with an airline to travel from place to place within Australia that's good because compared to North American prices it's expensive to fly here. If you have lots of time of course on the road is good, but be careful at night, I guarantee the first wild kangaroo you see you'll be oohing and aahing but the seven hundreth marsupial bozo that tries to commit hari kiri by bouncing in front of your vehicle will drive you nuts.

Anyway, just a couple of thoughts. I know well that North Americans regard the trip as long and arduous. It is. I've made it enough times to not look forward to it at all but sometimes you have to get on with it.

Oh my.....thanks for posting this! I'm a newbie here, but have to tell you I daily read the online Aussie papers. One day I *will* visit there. And I won't be tarrying in Sydney long. Too much to see and do in the great Sunburnt Land! Bill Bryson has written a book about touring Oz (forget the exact title, but it's something to do with a Sunburnt Land). It's an awesome read and *the* book that got me so interested in Oz.

I've been keeping up with the Melbourne gangland murders the last couple of years. LOL. Those people are farking nuts! Especially Judy Moran. Did she really think she was going to get away with having Des knocked off? It's like something written in a bad prime time soap or something. What an amateur she is.....and now the poor thing is going to waste the rest of her life in prison, while other various and assorted characters write books and make themselves wealthy off the whole story. Boo-hoo for Judy.

At any rate, I hope and pray that one day air flight to Oz will be much more affordable so that I will be able to make the trip. It's on my Bucket List. :D

Looking forward to getting to know you......

G'day.....Jeny

Fares are pretty competitive right now Jeny and they will probably stay that way for a while. It used to be the case that competition on the Sydney/LA route was restricted but it's opening up now and the airlines are definitely competing. The Travel sections in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age online (they're usually the same because they have the same publisher) have details from our viewpoint but it might help if anyone is looking at an airline.

Our dollar is a bit strong at the moment so that deters inbound visitors. But backpacking is very big here now, if anyone likes that sort of thing, it does make for affordable accommodation though. It's a bit big and empty away from the coast which means internal travel is relatively expensive when compared to North America and good planning is essential to make the best of a visit.

Our Australian dollar is on viagra at the moment!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *It just needed a few more exclaimation marks.

And China still has to suck up our rocks.

Life if guuuuuuuuuuuuuuud.

Well a visit to Oz is some years off, unfortunately. I am but a poor non-traditional Uni student (ie, I'm old and just going back to Uni). After I complete my degree and get a job, it will be more feasible to make a visit to Oz. Hopefully by then I will have money.

Right now I am raising teen aged twins and juggling their needs with school, rent and whatnot. Not in the cards for the moment....but thanks for the good advice. :D

G'day mate! I know that London Sydney trip well...or did. QF8 advertised as the only one-stop service to Australia...London/Bombay/Perth/Sydney. 24 hours! Fortunately, as I was working on QF advertising, I got to travel first class. Bonzer! No ankle-biters in there! Trouble was, I never ever did get to actually experience the trip beyond Bombay. Not after a slab of tinnies. I'm sure the bastards put something extra in the amber nectar to knock you out. I only drank though cos I invariably found myself sitting next to a fucking yabber. So, for me London/Sydney was only ever 12 hours. Bloody bonza mate!

Must admit. I love Oz. Apart from the blowies! Forever giving the Aussie salute. Oh, and the fucking biters. Some nasties there! And if i ever find that bastard who convinced me to go bush-bashing on my first visit, I'll rip his doodle off! I thought I was gonna be having naughties with the sheilas, not driving through the never-never!

All-in-all it really is a beautybonzaripperborisextrafuckinggrouse place. The seppos will love it!

From one non-traditional uni student (I was in my early thirties when I got in and still going thanks to my wife's encouragement) to another, good luck with your studies, it's worth it :D

Hello friend! I knew that journey well once upon a time. I travelled First Class. Excellent! Unfortunately I used to drink a lot of beer on the flight and I generally lost consciousness before the aircraft landed at Mumbai. I suspect the cabin staff may have interfered with my drinks though. However I must say that I only ever drank because I found myself sitting next to one of those interminable bores who doesn't know when to stop talking. So it was only perceived by me as a 12 hour journey which is very good.

I do like Australia. But the blowflies are a nuisance. One has to constantly wave one's hand in front of one's face to deter them. And there are many species that are deleterious to humans. I was persuaded to enter some fairly isolated rural areas by someone, if I find him again I'll ensure he enters the status of eunuch. I was under the impression I'd be having sex with lots of women, not driving for days along isolated bush tracks!

But on balance it is a wonderful place. Americans will love it!

Give it a try!

One thing: Americans aren't Seppos. We're Yanks! ;)

Sometimes better known as Bloody Yanks. Depending upon the speaker.

Unless I'm mistaken (Colin? Diuretic?) 'seppos' is derived from the cockney rhyming slang for Yanks.

I always thought Seppos was slang for the Brits.

You probably mean the English. Aussies generally tend to reserve their most barbed remarks for the English, not the Brits (which includes the Scots and Welsh). In fact, Aussies and Scots tend to be united by their historical animosity towards the English, along with the dozens of other countries who don't like us either. Oh well.

As far as I'm aware, 'seppos' it's a derivation of the rhyming slang "Septic Tanks" (Yanks).

Don't worry. Aussies have a VAST arsenal of terms of abuse for the English, many of them significantly less creative than 'seppos'.
