NKorea launches rocket, defying world pressure

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean government said. In Washington, the State Department also confirmed the launch.

The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.

"Our primary concern is to confirm safety and gather information," Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso told a news conference at his Tokyo office Sunday.

Resisting calls from President Barack Obama, Aso and Hu Jintao of China to call off the launch, North Korea had announced Saturday that preparations were complete to send communications satellite Kwangmyongsong-2 on a multistage rocket bound for the skies over Japan.

Tokyo deployed warships and Patriot missile interceptors off its northern coast to shoot down any debris that the North said might fall over the area.

this is really bad.

Newt Gingrich said a few days ago that if he were President he would take out the missile. Maybe it IS time for a 3rd party.

I wholeheartedly agree with Newt on that. We SHOULD have intercepted that rocket. By not doing so, we gave North Korea a free pass to do whatever they want.

Unfuckingbelievable. We've done the whole diplomacy thing with North Korea. Now it's time for action.

I don't think we'll get any.

North Korea is totally paranoid and extremely well defended against air and ground assaults.
Every dime they get goes into their 2 million man+ military. A lot of fighter planes.
Missile defenses that are deep and thick and good quality, for the most part.
We'd get strike forces in to eliminate the swarms of their jets and neutralize their radar sites, (most), but we would lose half the strike force, and would not get all the targets.
Deep bunkers in the mountains. Well disguiesd and defended.

And what would such a semisuccessful strike mission accomplish ?
NK would still have their missiles and nuke material, and a large military capable of defending and attacking.
Seoul would be destroyed within hours. NK has thousands of missiles trained on the largest city in Korea. Air attack cannot get eliminate most of those without a major ground offensive.
MAJOR ground offensive.
3 million civlian casaulties, in the first 2 days. IF NK's agents in ROK do not set off dirty bombs.
The NK have thousands of agents in the ROK.
And the body count and difficulty goes up from there, rapidly.
Mutually Assured Destruction. Emphasis on the Destruction part.
Sure, we could beat teh NK, but it would be awful, and costly beyond imagination.
The US and Japanese and ROK military look at this night and day.
They know the chess game many moves out, hundreds of scnearios,
and it always ends up with
a lot of dead people, millions of wounded starving desperate refugees, and South Korea smashed, in flames.
If we are lucky, we get to control a piece of crap burned out penninsula,
and if we are lucky, we will talk down from military intervention a pissed off China.

If it could have been done by now, without massive casualties, it would have.

Why don't you volunteer to infiltrate the DMZ and sabatage the missiles ?
You could do it. Piece of cake. Happens in tv shows all the time.

What diplomacy did we do with Iraq? Iraq didn't have nuclear weapons. North Korea does. Iraq didn't have a long-range missile capable of hitting the US. North Korea does. Iraq's army was in shambles. North Korea has one million men. HUGE difference.

And how many of those fighting men would DESSERT after going without FOOD for a week? N.K. hasn't the means to fight ANY kind of a protracted war. We could starve them into defeat and never fire a shot. The country is about to implode as is. I'd be surprised if the military didn't turn on the retard Kim himself.

12 fucking years of doing his typical, same old bullshit, yes, I agree. But did he launch a rocket near a US base in Saudi Arabia? Did he develop nuclear weapons after Israel took out his reactor in 1981?

North Korea is a huge threat today. There is a vast difference between a country that says it will launch a rocket and actually launches it.

It's time to show N. Korea who's boss. We already let the Russian invasion of Georgia occur without anything other than strong words and us running to the UN and doing nothing about it. The world is basically going to think that the US is too afraid to do anything because of Iraq.

BO has this covered.

He intends to make a strongly worded comment on it at his next town hall meeting, provided it's written on the teleprompter.

Not from your President. He is to Busy shoving his nose as far up European ass as he can get it.

Now Obama will wag his finger and run to the U.N.

Our good friends the Chinese could have stopped this and they could tame Kim Jung IL but they are happy to use the North Koreans as their attack dogs. I could see an invasion of South Korea and Taiwan soon and we will be powerless to stop it. If only we would have listened to McArthur back in the 50's.

Iraq had no air force, no SAMs. And the price to occupy it has been high in both men and material. And in the end, we gained nothing and lost much.

Keep North Korea contained, and eventually change will come. They know they cannot launch a war without the complete destruction of their sorry state. But they also know that they can take out South Korea and much of Japan, and wreak havoc with an invading force. The containment of the Soviet Union worked, and the containment of North Korea will also work.

We would have ended up in a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union, and been defeated in a land war with China.

Actually the Soviets had no credible nuclear weapons or systems to deliver them in 1950. In fact Truman THREATENED the Soviets with Nukes if they intervened on the North's side. That is why Kruschev was so irrate years later and why he wanted to " bury" the US.

MacArther would have and did advise to use nukes on China, not invade them. As did a highly placed Air Force General.

I don't think we should've been the force to shoot it down, but some wink and nod politics to let Japan know we'd have their back would've given them the confidence to do it for us. As is, I'm just happy it didn't make it to orbit, and instead crashed and burned in the ocean! Hopefully that will be significantly demoralizing for the N. Koreans.
