Unemployment rate may be really 14.6% !? not 10.2%!?

My prediction will be proven correct. I'm pretty confident of that. This White House along with Ben Bernanke already have their plan in the works. They will shave their Unemployment Numbers down to around 5 or 6% just in time for the Elections next year. They're already working on this sham as we speak. I don't believe any numbers coming from these guys at this point. They have already been caught cooking the books too many times. We'll just have to wait and see if Americans buy into their scam in the coming Elections. Hmm?

Oh...well if Libo "predicts" it...it must be so

I hear the unemployment rate may really be 14.6 % not 10.2 % as news media states!
Are we the American public being given accurate figures from state Dept of labor?.
Or is Government adjusting the real figures.!?

That's only for colored people. The unemployment rate for non-colored people is 0.

Here's MY second prediction for the thread (emboldened by the accuracy of my first, I am fearless in offering a second.)

If 1) unemployment figures are at 7.5% or lower, 2) the stock market is at least around 1,100 3) the troops are out of Iraq and Afghanistan, then we will all have luxury of going to bed very early (8 p.m. eastern) on election night 2012 already knowing POTUS has been re-elected by 10%+.

Never fear..

Libo will still be here well into the night to dispute the numbers

Thank God we don't conduct elections through INTERNET POLLS - Ron Paul would be elected GOD!

The unemployment rate of those actively seeking work is 10%. If you count people who have given up looking or have taken part-time jobs in the mean time, the rate is 17.2%

Politics aside, I really think that the unemployment rate should include everyone who is unemployed as in not working. This way we can avoid the manipulation that politicians play to cook the books.

Think about that. You're saying that retirees, stay at home spouses, full time students, should all be considered unemployed. Does that really make sense to you?

The politicians do NOT manipulate the official statistics in this country (except for their spin after release). They don't have access to the books. No one outside the BLS Office of Employment and Unemployment Statistics has any access to the numbers prior to publication (The President and Sec Labor are given a copy the night before to prepare for the press). The week of release the offices are locked so that no one who doesn't work there (including other BLS employees) can enter without escort.

People keep claiming the numbers are manipulated, but no one has ever stated exactly HOW.

Actually, people that have given up looking aren't counted in either of those numbers.

Never try to interfere with a good conspiracy theory. If the facts don't match your theory, just discard the facts

how do they figure the unemployment rate? applications for unemployment? If that is true then add up those who don't apply or have run out of unemployment and are still unemployed or have ceased looking for employment. Now what do you think it is?

It's calculated using a household survey.

Some people think that to get these figures on unemployment, the Government uses the number of persons filing claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits under State or Federal Government programs. But some people are still jobless when their benefits run out, and many more are not eligible at all or delay or never apply for benefits. So, quite clearly, UI information cannot be used as a source for complete information on the number of unemployed.

...

Because unemployment insurance records relate only to persons who have applied for such benefits, and since it is impractical to actually count every unemployed person each month, the Government conducts a monthly sample survey called the Current Population Survey (CPS) to measure the extent of unemployment in the country. The CPS has been conducted in the United States every month since 1940, when it began as a Work Projects Administration project. It has been expanded and modified several times since then. For instance, beginning in 1994, the CPS estimates reflect the results of a major redesign of the survey. (For more information on the CPS redesign, see Chapter 1, "Labor Force Data Derived from the Current Population Survey," in the BLS Handbook of Methods.)

There are about 60,000 households in the sample for this survey. This translates into approximately 110,000 individuals, a large sample compared to public opinion surveys which usually cover fewer than 2,000 people. The CPS sample is selected so as to be representative of the entire population of the United States. In order to select the sample, all of the counties and county-equivalent cities in the country first are grouped into 2,025 geographic areas (sampling units). The Census Bureau then designs and selects a sample consisting of 824 of these geographic areas to represent each State and the District of Columbia. The sample is a State-based design and reflects urban and rural areas, different types of industrial and farming areas, and the major geographic divisions of each State. (For a detailed explanation of CPS sampling methodology, see Chapter 1, of the BLS Handbook of Methods.)

Every month, one-fourth of the households in the sample are changed, so that no household is interviewed more than 4 consecutive months. This practice avoids placing too heavy a burden on the households selected for the sample. After a household is interviewed for 4 consecutive months, it leaves the sample for 8 months, and then is again interviewed for the same 4 calendar months a year later, before leaving the sample for good. This procedure results in approximately 75 percent of the sample remaining the same from month to month and 50 percent from year to year.

No, the U6 is Unemployed plus Marginally Attached plus part time for economic reasons divided by the labor force plus the marginally attached plus part time for economic reasons. The marginally attached are those who did not look in the previous 4 weeks but had looked sometime in the previous 12 months and say they want to work and are available. Many of those are people who gave up looking, especially the subset called Discouraged workers.

If they've been looking in the past 12 months and count themselves as wanting to work and are available to work aren't people who have given up looking.

If they looked sometime in the past 12 months, but aren't looking now or in the last month, then they obviously stopped looking sometime. How can you say someone hasn't stopped looking if they were in the past but aren't now even though they didn't find work?

I read the real unemployment is is somewhere btw 17-22%! The gov fluffs the numbers,

Side note: I heard unemployment of African Americans is around 30%!

I heard both of these as well.. The number is higher due to so called data correction that, if you look at it, does not make sense.

The truth is, there has to be a second set of numbers that are not published or else the country leaders are governing blind. Considering how they handled the Intellegence agency after 9/11, I tend to think we are flying blind.

The number is higher because they use a much broader definition, not any correction.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say...why would there have to be unpublished numbers?
