As nuclear peace talks are cancelled, overwhelming vote by general assembly calls for Israel to join nonproliferation treaty

The UN general assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on Israel to open its nuclear programme for inspection.

The resolution, approved by a vote of 174 to six with six abstentions, calls on Israel to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) "without further delay" and open its nuclear facilities to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Those voting against were Israel, the US, Canada, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.

Thier nukes are just fine, and well controlled. Considering they did not sign the NPT they are not bound by it.

So the UN can go pound sand.

So I guess Iran isn't bound by anything either? Is that ok with you? Or should they BOTH get inspected?

Israel has nukes? First the General Assembly reports seeing an imaginary Palestinian state and now they are troubled by fantasies of Israeli nukes? What are these people drinking?

I, unlike the Jew haters in this board, am not at all worried about Israel... Iran on the other hand is a rogue nation that sponsors terrorism and has previously invaded sovereign U.S. soil.

Nope, just Iran's. Iran's nukes are already killing people by causing tensions in the Gulf region that raises the price of oil that slow development in the third world costly lives there. The belief that Israel has nukes, on the other hand, saves lives by giving the Arab nations another reason to keep the peace.

If Israel capitulates to the wishes of the UN their toast. Iran is not bound by any agreement, in fact, has gone to great lengths in denying their objective, so, what right is it that of the UN to demand Israel agree to inspections? The UN is such a Pansy hypocritical organization it's amazing they have survived all these years. Next thing they will say is North Korea and Iran are exempt?

The UN has survived because no one takes its pronouncements very seriously. Think of it as a WPA for third string diplomats.

Iran's Nuclear energy program is monitored under NPT which Iran has signed
The Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 as amended by the Symington Amendment of
1976 and the Glenn Amendment of 1977 prohibit US military assistance to
countries that acquire or transfer nuclear reprocessing technology outside of
international nonproliferation regimes. Israel, unlike Iran, is not a
signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"Governance depends on rule of law-- it
is imperiled if government openly flouts important laws. It is no longer
acceptable for Congress or the President to invoke 'strategic ambiguity,' a
practice whereby US government officials publicly pretend to the American
people that Israel possesses no nuclear weapons."

invaded U.S soil ? rouge nation ?...wtf are babbling about ???

Jos, Staidhup, et al,

This is true. Israel is what we call a "Nuclear Ambiguous" state. It neither confirms nor denies its status regarding nuclear weapons.

(COMMENT)

Our politically dimwitted leadership in Washington and Tel Aviv knew that if they pushed the issue with Iran, that this would become an issue. But, I think there is something not yet made public. I think there is a Presidential Finding on the issue that dates back several administrations, citing the US National Security Interest for keeping the amended Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 at bay.

However, The NPT (Article X) allows for a signatory state to withdraw if there is a sound national security reason. (I have posted this before in another threat.)

Article X said:
1. Each Party shall in exercising its national sovereignty have the right to withdraw from the Treaty if it decides that extraordinary events, related to the subject matter of this Treaty, have jeopardized the supreme interests of its country. It shall give notice of such withdrawal to all other Parties to the Treaty and to the United Nations Security Council three months in advance. Such notice shall include a statement of the extraordinary events it regards as having jeopardized its supreme interests.

Currently, within the international community, it is commonly believed that Israel is an undeclared nuclear power within an otherwise Regional Nuclear Free Zone; and that it has a number of tactical nuclear weapons. Israel is believed to have less than 60 weapons ready thermonuclear devices in several configuration today (and as many as 40 in unassembled form), an actual reduction from years back; but they are also believed to be state-of-the-art devices replacing limited number of '67 post-War era weapons; from the Negev Facility in Dimon (all hearsay, public domain - less the notations made by former President Jimmy Carter). Israel is also believed to have a military war reseve holding of plutonium in the amount of several hundred kilograms.

In a nutshell, we always knew that before Iran formally withdrew from the Treaty, they would raise the specter of this issue, demonstrating that Iran was not being fairly treated on the matter of enrichment, and that Israel was not being held to the same standard. This would be the cause of action; and that the previous threatened attacks by Israel (a nuclear power) would be a self explanatory demonstration of the security threat. It is a very cute trick and they might just get away with it.

One of many lines of thought here, are to converge as many anti-Israeli issues at once on the international stage in order to demonize the nation and weaken its international support.

Most Respectfully,
R

It's important for Israel to maintain its ambiguity about its nuclear capabilities.

Israel has rightly refused to cooperate on this issue while many of its Muslim neighbours remain committed to its complete destruction.

When peace and harmony exist in the Middle East then this question could again be considered by Israel for its cooperation....to do so sooner could be suicide.

Israel is not committed to the destruction of any of its neighbours unlike Iran, which poses a serious threat to the whole world and not only to Israel!
