So much for the "land of the free", I guess. I would hope that even the Libertarian-types around here would be a little outraged at this.

Sheehan arrested in House gallery

Tuesday, January 31, 2006; Posted: 10:46 p.m. EST (03:46 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House gallery after refusing to cover up a T-shirt bearing an anti-war slogan before President Bush's State of the Union address.

"She was asked to cover it up. She did not," said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman, adding that Sheehan was arrested for unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail, Schneider said.

It's the federal government, not a hoedown. There's a dress code, and a t-shirt doesn't fit the dress code, no matter what it says on it. Sheehan, being the exhibitionist media whore she is, chose to violate the dress code, probably hoping she would be arrested so she could claim it was because of what the shirt said.

Obviously, she doesn't have sense enough to dress appropriately. Of course, she also doesn't know how to behave appropriately, so it's no surprise. I hope she kicked up enough fuss to get a year.

Hey Get this, you can be arrested for yelling FIRE in a public place, or being nude too!
What's the Country coming to, rules? Go figure. :funnyface

So I can now be arrested for breaking dress code? Wow, I guess kicking you out of the building is not enough when you are a liberal? You gotta lock us in Jail too with up to a year in prison?

What a great country Bush has truned this into.

Yeah, let's restrict anti-federal government speech, even when peaceful and discreet. It's not like she threw up a big sign and started screaming. And if they wanted, they could have escorted her out. Arrest is just outrageous.

What law? That's the point. Dress code isn't against the law. Kick her out, but trying to arrest her for wearing an anti-war shrit is a different story all together.

there are restaurants that require coat tie and dress slacks as well....get over yourself
Will Bush arrest me if I don't wear one?

maybe they were escorting her out and she resisted.....

I don't care if the shirt says "Bush is the greatest person in the world...except Jesus." Wearing a t-shirt, or any shirt with a slogan on it, for that matter, to the State of the Union address is the absolute nadir of all things tacky. It's like wearing cutoffs to a coronation. The fact that it's tacky means you should be kicked out. However, if it's a proceeding of the federal government, and the attire can disrupt the proceeding, then it becomes a crime.

They did escort her OUT. As far as arrest being outrageous, when you have most of the leadership of the Country in on place it's not. Hell, I'd a shot the bitch!

If you go into a building that is having an invite only function then yes you can be removed for violating the dress code. She was NOT arrested. She was detained and removed from the building. any arrest came after that for unruly conduct. You cant go to a person's wedding dressed in sweats and a T-shirt and demand access. There is a dress code and they can tell you to leave.

That's not what it seems given the story. If so, I could understand and accept that. I'm looking forward to this going to court. I bet they drop the charges, and if so, I hope she sues. It's outrageous behavior if all she did was wear the T-shirt and for it she gets arrested.

Not until it actually disrupts things. If it doesn't ever disrupt, then it's ok. That's the basic standard I've seen when reading up in the last few minutes. It's the same standard used in allowing students to wear T-shirts in school that teachers try to ban. You can only restrict/ban the shirt AFTER it causes a disruption. Until then, it's protected.

This reported didn't cause any disruption other than the one Bush's henchman caused by hassling her.

Feel free to provide any support for your unsubstantiated assertions about the conditions for arrest. If you aren't just making that up, you should have no problem.
