It's easy to see how this threat by Iran has the potential to create a world wide crisis. I suspect the Obama Administration has looked at all options and communicated with both the Russians and Chinese as to possible scenarios.

Should Iran attempt to blockade the strait one could be sure any tanker attempting to leave will be escorted by a Man of War flying the flag of the US, Britain or France; Iranian forces attacking such a vessel would be committing an act of war.

I suspect the Obama Administration has back-channel contact with leaders of the Iranian Green Movement and if hostilites break out supplies & intel will be provided by us to the citizens of Iran, allowing them to battle the thugs who killed and injured many young people under orders of the theocratic leadership.

If Iran closed the strait, it would force shippers to take longer, more expensive routes that would drive oil prices higher. Oil from Iraq and Kuwait would have to be trucked overland to Saudi Ports on the Red Sea as would some Saudi oil. 17% of the worlds oil supply goes through the Strait.
