Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year.

Before we speculate who the replacement might be. We should wait until he renders his resignation.

No I won't accept that, it's all speculation at this point. Even if he were to retire it would not change the ideological balance. There is no outward sign that Stevens has slowed or can no longer keep up with the work. On the contrary, he is one of the few justices who writes a first draft of all his opinions and dissents, instead of relying on clerks. And in the courtroom, he asks probing questions of the lawyers.
