U.S. Space program was always a waste of money.

I am really pleased that President Obama has decieded to cancel the back to the Moon, and the Mars program. Those kinds of program do nothing but massage Americas ego.

When I think of all the billions of dollars that have been spent at Nasa, I think how that money could have been spent on housing for the homeless, or food for people who have nothing to eat.

I value all the technological advances that the space program has brought us, but in these economic times, money must be spent on human needs.

The money "wasted" on those programs fund jobs though.

I'd rather the government give money to people working and doing something constructive than give a handout to someone too lazy to even get a job at McDonalds.

I agree. I have to ask though, who's getting handouts that are too lazy to get a job at McDonalds?

Nasa is very much the reason we were on the top of the worlds cutting edge industries for decades.
Exactly.
Miniature electronics - NASA development.
Lightweight Composites - ditto
Advanced Robotics armatures - ditto
etc.

So to you who are reading this on a flatscreen over the internet I have a news flash -without NASA you would have a green dot matrix CRT and be looking at a "newfangled" bulletin board.
The taxes collected from the increased productivity as a direct result of NASA research has more than paid for the entire program to date.

If you want to go crawl back into your cave, then go ahead and ignore NASA.

That's the myth that needs to be destroyed. Research CAN be done even if you aren't planning on finding out what's under a rock on Neptune.

Your myth is the one that needs elimination.
Focused research to solve an applied problem produces far more value than nebulous general research.
Of course welfare babies probably would prefer to get more for themselves, but I am not intrigued by socialism.

Are you implying that the only place to focus research is outer space ?

Every time I think you've posted your dumbest, you top it.....

Hey now.. Just because someone hasn't been hired even by a McDonalds, doesn't mean they are too lazy to work there. Besides, most people who are on food stamps and other forms of welfare are disabled or have dealt with a lot of life events that caused them to be temporarily too poor to pay the entire cost of housing and food. Do you know that one in ten US families skip a meal every day? Food budget adjustments are easier to do than rent budget adjustments. Many times, people become homeless because they have to decide between food and rent.

I do say that the food stamps program gives way too much money to people for food.
I can't understand how a single person can possibly go through 200 dollars in food all by themselves in one month. That is basically what we are spending on food stamps per person, per month. Sorry, but a person does not need that much money for food. My son and I used to survive pretty easily off of 60-75 dollars a month for food, for the both of us. At one time, my budget was REALLY low for food, at 45 dollars, and I exchanged massage services (licensed) to my child's caregiver for child care and a couple of meals a week. Now, that might be a little low, but still- Even dropping the amount of food stamp allotments down to a hundred a month per person would still feed the hungry poor people pretty darn well. I know that most people spend about a hundred dollars per person in the household for groceries.

Anyhoo- I agree that the money spent on the space program would be well spent elsewhere, too, especially in today's economy.. but I also think that we need to do more to encourage people to reproduce, as well. We are dealing with a problem of an aging demographic, because people are not reproducing enough children to support the economy. Sounds backwards, but children grow up to be spending adults. Stocks are supported mostly by shoppers, more than by people just buying stocks.

The safest stocks to buy right now are in utility companies, food and oil. That is because people are always spending money on those things, so those stocks are stable.

We must all realize that many of those mission control, innovations were created by private industries,
on behalf of NASA, IBM, Honeywell, Rockwell intl, ect, ect,.

NASA really needs to do a better job publicizing the role it has played in cutting edge technology.
How many can we name, the laptop computer, came from a design from the LEM, Lunar Excursion Module, and the computers that were used onboard. Velcro, Tang,
What other items can you people name came from the space program?

Its not their job, its the people job to stop being idiots and start thinking things trough all the way.

Its not just items its ideas.

All modern manufacturers use the technology in their computorized machinery.

Nearly every modern innovation has its origin in the Space Race. At the very basic level you can point to the fact that the United States was forced to refocus on mathematics education just to catch up.

If you want something more tangible, every single piece of technology that uses satellites can find its origins in NASA. Most of the push towards miniturization in electronics comes from the space race. Most of the computer innovations have been pushed in one way or another from the NASA.

Fact is, NASA is second only to the US Military for being a source of technological innovation. It is, was, and always will be money well spent. Cutting NASA and the Space Program to the extent Obama has will probably cost him my vote and financial contributions in 2012.

Obama is putting the "Science" back into "Rocket science". Bush had no "goal" beyond, "Let's go to the moon".

NASA: Good Night Moon, Hello New Rocket Technology | Product Design and Development

Musk said that within three years of getting contract with NASA, he could deliver astronauts to the international Space Station for a bout $20 million a head, cheaper than the $50 million Russia is charging the United States.

Obama is simply cutting something that doesn't do anything and forcing innovation. Putting "science" back into "rocket science".

Just because innovations came from research about one thing does not mean that one is the ONLY way it can be done. It's faulty logic.
