The World Health Organization (WHO) is considering a plan to ask governments to impose a global consumer tax on such things as Internet activity or everyday financial transactions like paying bills online.

Such a scheme could raise "tens of billions of dollars" on behalf of the United Nations' public health arm from a broad base of consumers, which would then be used to transfer drug-making research, development and manufacturing capabilities, among other things, to the developing world.

The multibillion-dollar "indirect consumer tax" is only one of a "suite of proposals" for financing the rapid transformation of the global medical industry that will go before WHO's 34-member supervisory Executive Board at its biannual meeting in Geneva.

The WHO scheme to transfer impressive amounts of money, technology, patents and manufacturing ability to the developing world in a global battle to conquer disease looks similar in many respects to the calls for huge transfers of wealth and technology that were at the heart of the just-failed U.N.-sponsored conference on lowering greenhouse gas emissions at Copenhagen.

Ah. The new world order...

OH yes, the New World Order is still alive and well. Another ripoff scheme to steal money from the masses and put it in the hands of the wealthy. That will be the day some SOB outside the USA taxes me for anything like my personal banking.

Soon, into a PC near and including you. They will eventually implement this, they know people are basically to 'into ' their personal 'comfort zones' and let crap like this sneak up on them, then they cry like babies. And if they have a hard time with it, they'll call Nancy Pelosi and her 'pals' and vote at night on a holiday weekend and pass it anyway.

I fully support limiting our role in the UN. Things like this only make my stance stronger. These foreign organizations do not have our best interests in mind. I would also like to see us end our involvement with the WTO and IMF. Globalism/Internationalism is vastly over-rated. Unfortunately both the Socialists and NeoCons in this country fully support Globalism/Internationalism. We need real change in this country. Give the boot to all Socialists and NeoCons from both parties.

This actually violates the general welfare clause because the government can only tax for the purpose of providing a common defense and providing for the general welfare. I assume that it is talking about the general welfare of the people of the United States not the entire world.

I've thought the same thing. The United States can leave and its best interest would be served by that but there is a ton of what ifs that have to be considered. What if the UN body decides to war with us? What if the countries of the world vote to do something really nasty to us. We would have no recourse because we are not a part of that body any more. What we should do is think of a way to either dissolve the UN or render it powerless.

The UN can't implement a tax on anybody who doesn't agree to it and I don't see this administration agreeing to something so politically risky.

For once, we agree. There is no way that any Administration would try to pass this or try to get this approved without risking political suicide.

If the UN wants money so badly, have a damn fundraiser.

While I am not a fan of the United Nations, I do enjoy the fact we have a veto vote and I'd hate to lose that. God knows what they would do or pass if we left.

Who we going to trust to protect our interests, France? Fucking likely as a blizzard in Hell tomorrow. ::eusa_eh:

Wouldn't our own government protect our interests? Who cares what the UN does if we weren't a part of it?

As much as isolationism sounds like a fun idea, in reality it hasn't really worked for us in the past 100 years.

I knew you would ask exactly that though. I don't know if it's a combination of how well I've gotten to understand the full Libertarian thought process or just your thinking.

The UN is already powerless without the USA.

Well in that case, I have to remind you that, as a libertarian, I view my body as my property and respectfully ask you to stay out of my head. ;)

At any rate, I'm not a supporter of isolationism, but non-interventionism. But back to my question. Do we have a vote in France or the UK to protect our interests from their governments? No. So why would we need one in the UN? They wouldn't be able to do anything to us anymore than France or the UK would.

we should leave and let the corrupt UN fall flat on its face. its workers will have to find new ways to fund their oil stealing and child prostitution rings. whats the net gain of our membership in the UN since we joined?
