Two Party System

.

I still think the third party should be The Christian Party.

That takes up the hardcore Christian conservatives, probably moves many independents towards the GOP now that God isn't running it, evens things out a bit, re-arranges the deck chairs.

However, I've mentioned this three times now with no agreement from anyone, so maybe I should just shut the fuck up.

lol – that may be better than what we have now but still think no parties would be better than that. Something about elected officials having to run on actual positions rather than on the letter next to their name and representative actually representing the people rather than a party…

it would be nice in theory to have more choices and ideas. Of course, if you look at it for the elections and congress you find it would not work.

in elections you need 50 percent of the votes, or 50 percent of the electoral votes. With just three parties you have trouble getting that with a split, or you kill two of the parties right off the bat.

.

Nice in theory?

You do realise that every other developed country in the world has multi-party democracy in practice right?

Why do parties need 50% of the vote....I have no idea what you mean by that.

Look, if there 8 - 10 major parties, then you hve 8 - 10 clearly different agendas to choose between. In the US there would be a Greens Party, a Tea Party party, the Dems would split into one Centre Party and one social Democract Party, there might be a Christian Party, a Socialist Party...that is REAL choice.

I don't see a downside for it.

The US Government is a better-run institution than any of these other nations to which you're referring here... downside #1.

Lots of folks I've spoken to have criticized our two-party system, and I've even read a few posts concerning that here.

Does anyone support this layout anymore?

I don't support it but the power of the two party system now DOES seem to come from the way power is dealt out in Congess.

If we want a system that has more parties, we really need to change the basic structure of government.

Danger!

Nah, That's great... I don't know if religious parties are excluded or if Christians can get along well enough to function, but i back the motif. I was hoping the tea party showed some discipline and organized for that reason. It would center the GOP.

Drum up the votes for a parliamentary system change to the Constitution, and I don't give a damn if it's a 100 party system.

It isn't really a two party system, that's a misnomer. However, the two major parties do have a stranglehold on it. I don't have anything against the currect system, I just wish people would wake up and look at other parties instead of just the two.

The Party Insiders of Both Parties support it, and sustain it. For all their fighting with Each other, they work together Very well when it comes to making sure nobody else is even allowed a chance to play in the game.

The media has a lot of blame for that as well.

As I recall, there was about a two-week period at the very beginning during which the Tea Party was about responsible government spending. They had my attention then. But almost immediately, the movement was hijacked by the Bachmann/Palin/Beck types, and that was that.

We don't have a two party system.

All but a few exceptions in the Legislature are members of two parties, and our election law directly facilitates two dominant parties.

That we have elected officials not of the two parties is proof we do not have a two party system.

I voted for Perot, for example, who won something like 20% of the vote. (Of course, that meant we got a loser that had to be impeached, but that is another story)

Point is, if people buy your message, you can get elected regardless of party affiliation.

Is it infinitely harder to get elected if not affiliated with the two leading parties, since most politicos flock into the two parties for critical mass?

Hell yes!

Well, SniperFire, there are also campaign finance rules which make it more up-hill as an indy or 3rd party. Anyone or any party can participate, but it is built up to keep a dominantly two-party government. Is that cool?

Sorry, but to your OP, there are no 'buts.'

We don't have a two party system.
