:crutch: It sounds like the name of a moon orbiting a planet in another galaxy...But, rhuFab(Lucentis) is one of a new class of drugs being used to treat and reverse some forms of blindness. Other experimental drugs being tested that work by a similar mechanism are EYE1001, Squalamine, Retaane...etc.

The San Francisco based, Genentech, is the biotechnology company that developed rhuFab. It has been used to treat patients with the wet form of age related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

In one of the clinical trial, Eileen Russell, had been declared legally blind. She had lost vision in her right eye four years earlier and then lost sight in her right eye...after four injections of the drug, her left eye returned to 20-25 sight.

In macular degeneration abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and the leakage destroys the retina and causes a loss of vision. Researchers isolated a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) which promotes this abnormal growth of blood vessels. RhuFab is a specifically designed anti-body that blocks VEGF and prevents this abnormal growth of blood vessels...For other clinical trials see...

Woody, thank you very much for posting this. My father has macular degeneration, and I will share this with him. And millions will suffer from diabetic retinopathy. Cool post.

And Welcome to the board! :)
