A desolate country where the soil is rich enough, but is given wholly to weeds. A silent, mournful expanse, a desolation, we never saw a human being on the whole route. There was hardly a tree or shrub anywhere. Even the cactus and olive tree, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country. It is empty, destitute and a barren desert. Palestine sits in sackloth and ashes, desolate and unlovely. It is dreamland.

Galilee is now full of trees. I have camped there. Nazareth, Tiberias and Jerusalem are beautiful, bustling cities. Even the desert blooms.
