Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu: Syrian opposition fighters and Iraqi Kurds are legitimate forces fighting against ISIL.

AYDIN, Turkey

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reiterated his country's support for the Free Syrian Army and the Iraqi Peshmerga fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant at Kobani.

Cavusoglu said Free Syrian Army is the only armed group in the region which fights for all Syrians, unlike the Democratic Union Party and ISIL.

"PYD and ISIL both have the goal of controlling a specific part of Syria and seizing the region's rich resources," Cavusoglu said.

No, Türkiye does not support the Syrian Free Army. Not wholly.

The problem is that the SFA is allied with the Kurdish PKK, the terrorist group Türkiye has been fighting since the early 1990s. In Kobane, the SFA group fighting ISIL is the PYD (a Syrian Kurdish group).

It's a confusing alphabet soup, but Türkiye is basically not getting involved in Kobane because they don't want to help the PKK, the Kurds, or the PYD, who they consider an ally of Bashar Assad.
