Governmental leaders in Turkey's earlier administration were thrown out as a consequence of incompetent handling of the 1999 earthquake. Erdogan could suffer a similar fate. The earthquake in Izmit in 1999 occured in one of Turkey's industrial hubs and densely populated areas. It killed 17.000 people and partly destroyed heavy industries like oil refineries and introduced a special tax for reconstruction.

The government of that time ruled until 2002.

The damage done by this earthquake is at most 10 Billion $.
Around 5.739 buildings were classified as not usable anymore after first inspection, those will be rebuilt and needed infrastructure rebuilt.
