TSA agents yelled at her, handcuffed her to a chair, ripped up her ticket...

Israel has never had a big problem with their airline security, and they don't do any of that Orwellian crap.

No they dont have a problem.

BUT Israel profiles and make no bones about it. You look like a terrorist in their book, you are getting searched in detail.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

The TSA chose Meg McLain for special screening. They wanted her to go through the new porno-scanners. When she opted out, TSA agents raised an enormous ruckus. When she asked some question about what they planned to do to her, they flipped out. TSA agents yelled at her, handcuffed her to a chair, ripped up her ticket, called in 12 local Miami cops and finally escorted her out of the airport. Listen to her story as she told it on radio show Free Talk Live last night. Things are truly getting scary.

I think we'll be planning on trips closer to home from now on. I don't want my daughters subjected to this type of humiliating treatment.

Um, she lied.

I HATE the tsa!

They are little people with a very small bit of power over others. Just enough to fuck with you.

No. They are overworked. And underpaid. They are constantly tested on protocol and security so they can .... Maybe ... Avoid another 9/11. They work ungodly hours so you can get your red-eye from the coast or your flight to Europe. They are denied normal raises b/c they are the only federal agency without collective bargaining thanks to Jim demint the piece of garbage. But you know what? No TSO has ever mistreated me...because I smile at them, am polite and don't give them grief. Most have no interest in harassing you. They want to finish their shift-- preferably without something blowing them up.

It's kind of funny that this is your blind spot.

Oh...and I don't believe the O/P for a second.

:) Hugs ;)

Yeah i know all of that. I have tried the smile nicely and be polite (which is how i usually am) but i fly far to much and see to many of them. The rules change at every airport and that is very annoying.

But then again the attitude of being over worked, under paid and only wanting to finish a shift is also not where TSA heads need to be doing a job like that.

Israeli airport security doesn't profile people AFAIK. Basically the procedure is they have security officers walking around and they ask to see your passport, where you are going, and make small talk. If you act weird or say the wrong things they will escalate to more questioning and eventually searches etc.

On one hand, I bet they ask everybody that "looks like a terrorist," but they don't do that and then take coffee breaks. They ask as many people as they can. Besides... a brown guy standing in an Israeli airport isn't going to look suspicious at all.

Right, they mix and mingle and profile. They look for shifty and what like a potential terrorist.

they have very sophisticated equipment...and they question EVERYONE... not just people who 'look like terrorists'. one of them had an entire conversation with me about where my father grew up just to see if i could carry through with the convo.

i have flown to all kinds of places, too... though probably not as frequently as you fly. I've never had an issue. The rules shouldn't be changing. they're centralized adn they all have the same protocol.

The point about wanting to get through their shift is that they couldn't care less about harassing someone on the line. They want to do their jobs.

Though when you ask people to do a job like that, they should probably be paid accordingly. Write your senators and tell them to give the TSA collective bargaining and put them on a real GS line with REAL raises.

oh...and *hug* back. :)

Look, we all have to be randomly screened. Black, White, Arab. Whoever. If you are selected, you submit to it. Period.

Why? If I ever decide to fly again, why should I have to submit to the momentary whims of a McDonald's reject?

I would most certainly hope that the people who are basically in charge, or should we say on the front lines, of air travel security are more than several cuts above McDonalds rejects.

Want back to a 9/10 world?

A world where we didn't have to submit to government background tickets before we boarded an airplane. A world where we did not have to submit to arbitrary rules imposed by people who know absolutely nothing about security.

Why would anyone want to go back to that?

I would like to extend my personal thanks to the TSA for helping to make sure none of us have gotten killed on a plane in a very long time.

While it takes a whole 1 hour more of my life to get on a plane, I think a mature person that doesn't want to die can suck up the minor inconvienience.

9/10 thinking got ~ 3000 people killed.

Why don't you tell me how the TSA stopped Richard Reid and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, and tell me that the system worked. You will then be presented with your honorary Janet Napolitano parrot button and your secret decoder ring.

Not from what I've seen and experienced. They either make rules up as they go along, or don't even bother to do their jobs. When I did fly, I was hassled by a TSA agent in the Lambert Airport smoker's room (after the security checkpoint) because he decided he wanted to check my laptop case. When I asked him why, his answer was "because I feel like it". On a different trip, the screener wasn't even looking at the machine when my case went through, and I had 2 BIC lighters in it.

On the other hand, I was almost strip-searched once because I had a paper clip in my checkbook, and they couldn't figure out what was setting off the detector. When they found it, they confiscated it. Which was a good thing, as I may have decided to clip the pilot's flight plans together with it. Thank God for over-zealous government cop wanna-bes.

Want back to a 9/10 world?

Man,i thought your Hopey Changey was going to change all this. Has he gotten rid of the Patriot Act yet? Things have only gotten worse in my opinion. Now the Airports are herding you in there like they're herding you into Prison. Naked body scans and public maulings? Yikes!

Ah, there you go...you blame Obama...

Perhaps you are recommending that we no longer do screening at airports? :eusa_eh:

That does sound like a good idea. Or do you actually think that screening is accomplishing anything. Like keeping known terrorists who leave bombs in Times Square from getting on planes.

I hear a lot of complaints, but no one has any real solutions. By the way I have never had a security problem flying. Of course last time I flew was before 9-11-01. But I have gone right up to the security check point with people about 5 times since then.

Oh...and for the people with the vivid imaaginationx who make this stuff up.... TSA doesn't have handcuffs.

Just saying.

Bazinga

TSA is the only security agency in the united states that does not have handcuffs? Even the rent a cop in the bank has cuffs.

Just saying.

I have never seen them with cuffs. That is not to say the tsa didn't call security to cuff that woman.

You can go up to the checkpoint as much as you want. I have done it waiting for people on incoming flights, and watched the "TSA Follies" on many occasions.

Try to go through the checkpoints. That's where the real circus begins.

I'm sorry. I'll try to do better next time.

Couldn't have said it better myself! :wink_2:

I went through one of those body scanners at the Philly airport on the 4th of July this past summer...No BFD.

And truth is, there's a protocol for people who decline to go through....

And it doesn't include handcuffs...except maybe in the fevered imagination of someone who wants to pretend his gf is a tso and he's been very, very naughty. :eusa_whistle:

And we all know without a doubt that no underpaid, overworked, security dweeb would ever violate protocol by, for example, putting white powder in your luggage and threatening to have you arrested.

Oops.

Things like this might be why people tend to believe any ridiculous story about the TSA that comes along. The real stories about the TSA make the ridiculous stories look plausible.
