At this week’s G-7 meeting, Donald Trump offered the world an unexpected glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, the U.S. and China might be making some progress ironing out their differences on trade. “China called last night our top trade people and said ‘let’s get back to the table,’ so we will be getting back to the table and I think they want to do something,” he said. “They have been hurt very badly but they understand this is the right thing to do and I have great respect for it. China didn’t force them; AMERICA did through their trade policies. We’ve been keeping it as profitable as possible to manufacture in China and it’s been a gift to big business for many years and that stops now. I have. I’m a libertarian. I love the idea of free trade but free without fair means nothing. I’m willing to see this through until we achieve something better for us. We can’t keep relying on China to provide us with our needs it’s ruining us and I don’t see any other way to do it. I wish it never had to come to this and as a president I would certainly never want to have to come out and say I’m instituting tariffs on products our companies are importing but if I inherited a trade mess that puts me in a position to have no other realistic choice to change things then I guess I’d have to decide between making the hard choice that might come with a little initial pain or secure my reelection by not upsetting the apple cart. I’m glad we have someone who’s finally not afraid of making a tough choice that could hurt him politically.
